Indian Defence Exports

Indonesian Navy has 7 modern LPDs, Indian Navy has a single relic. They are currently buying a British Frigate, Italian Frigate and Evolved Scorpene simultaneously.

Thier capacity to seriously execute naval projects is way better that Indian Navy dreams of.
Wrong, there is no comparison between the navies and shipbuilding capabilities of both countries. We are far ahead in every respect.

The reason for more amphibious ships is geography. Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago. Compared to their geography, they do not have enough LPDs or shipbuilding capability.

Ukraine’s Indian Supplier: SMPP Private Limited

By alphadefense.in

When the Russia-Ukraine conflict began, both nations sought India’s support. Ukraine requested weapons and protective gear, while Russia insisted India refrain from supplying anything to Ukraine. At the outset, India maintained neutrality, emphasizing that “peace is the solution.” However, during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Ukraine, India extended support by providing medical equipment, food, and humanitarian aid, which Russia looked as inconsequential.

Indian Artillery Shells in Ukraine: A Controversial Discovery

India decided not to supply weapons to either side, though Russia had little need for Indian weaponry. However, Ukraine received arms from multiple global sources. A major controversy emerged when Indian-made artillery shells surfaced in Ukraine. Russia formally protested to the Indian government, demanding an explanation. In response, the Indian government launched an inquiry to determine how state-owned munitions from Munition India Limited (MIL) ended up in Ukraine.

India’s Defense Exports: Beyond Artillery Shells

Artillery shells were not the only Indian exports to Ukraine during the conflict. An Indian defense giant supplied Ukraine with ballistic vests, helmets, plate carriers, and ceramic plates. These shipments, routed through the Netherlands, provided Ukraine with critical protective gear.

SMPP Private Limited: Supplying Protective Gear to Ukraine

An Indian private company, SMPP Private Limited, played a key role in supplying protective equipment. Between March 2022 and December 2022, data compiled by Alpha Defence revealed 59 shipments to the Netherlands and then to Ukraine. Each shipment contained ballistic vests, helmets, vest outer carriers, and hard armor plates. Though the shipments ranged between 750 to 1,000 units per batch, the total export volume was significant:
  • 20,850 bulletproof vests
  • 14,850 ballistic helmets
  • 10,000 additional hard armor ceramic plates
Implications of India’s Defense Exports

Although these exports might displease Russia, they highlight two critical aspects. First, India’s industrial capacity is vital in any conflict. If India actively supported a war, its manufacturing strength could shift the balance. However, India remains largely non-aligned, preventing its full industrial potential from influencing the war.

Second, the demand for Indian military protective gear underscores its growing reputation in the global defense market. Indian manufacturers have demonstrated their ability to meet large-scale orders, reinforcing India’s emergence as a reliable supplier of military-grade protective equipment.

Overall, India’s role in the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains complex. While maintaining an stance of neutrality, its defense exports have indirectly supported Ukraine. The controversy surrounding Indian artillery shells continues, but the demand for Indian protective gear highlights the country’s growing influence in global defense manufacturing. As India strengthens its defense production capabilities, its role as a global supplier will only expand, shaping future conflicts and security dynamics worldwide.

Summary:
  • India aims to boost local arms production and exports
  • Pinaka system demonstrated to French delegation, found satisfactory
  • Modi and Macron to hold bilateral talks in Paris
BENGALURU, India, Feb 10 (Reuters)- France is in advanced talks with India to buy a multi-barrel rocket launcher system, a top Indian official said on Monday, a potential deal that would be the first time India's second-largest arms supplier buys weapons from New Delhi.

India is the world's biggest arms importer, but has been trying to boost local production to meet its defence requirements and has been steadily raising its defence exports.

The domestically made Pinaka rocket system with a range of up to 90 km (56 miles) was demonstrated to a French delegation in India around three months ago and was found to be satisfactory, a second official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"France is in active talks for Pinaka," Ummalaneni Raja Babu, the director general of missiles and strategic systems at India's Defence Research and Development Organisation, said on the sidelines of the Aero India aerospace exhibition in the southern city of Bengaluru.

"A deal has not been reached yet, but the talks are continuing," said Babu.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on a visit to France on Monday to co-chair an artificial intelligence summit in Paris with French President Emmanuel Macron and both leaders are scheduled to hold bilateral talks on Tuesday.

It was not immediately clear if the rocket system will feature in the talks, and India's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

France's embassy in India did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside of business hours.

France was India's second-largest arms supplier after Russia between 2019 and 2023, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute.

The Pinaka rocket launcher system, used by the Indian Army and deployed in the 1999 war between India and Pakistan, is also being enhanced with longer ranges, Babu said.

Summary:
  • Philippines interested in buying India's Akash missiles
  • Order likely to be placed in fiscal year starting April
  • Manila building up military as tension grows with China
  • Deal will be 2nd major defence export contract with Manila
NEW DELHI, Feb 13 (Reuters)- India expects to sell short-range missiles to the Philippines this year in a deal worth more than $200 million, Indian sources told Reuters, for New Delhi's second major defence export contract with Manila as tension grows with China.

The Akash missile system developed by India's defence research body has drawn interest from the Philippines, which has told New Delhi it would make an order in the fiscal year that begins in April, said three sources. All the sources spoke on condition of anonymity as the matter is a sensitive one.

The surface-to-air missile system with a range of up to 25 km (16 miles) was exported to Armenia last year in a $230-million deal, the sources said, adding that the Philippine sale is expected to be bigger than the Armenian deal. However, they did not reveal the number of missiles and accompanying systems, including radars, involved.

India's Bharat Dynamics Ltd, the manufacturer of the missiles, was one of the exhibitors at last year's Asian Defense and Security Exhibition in Manila. The company and India's defence ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A Philippine defence spokesperson, Arsenio Andolong, declined to comment on the specifics of any deal or on plans for procurement, but said the country's armed forces had "manifested it requires these capabilities". The expected deal would follow India's $375-million sale of the mid-range BrahMos supersonic cruise missile to the Philippines in 2022.

The purchase comes at a time when Manila is building its military strength as tension escalates with Beijing on overlapping claims in the busy waterway of the South China Sea, where the two have clashed in recent years.

India is the world's biggest arms importer but is stepping up domestic production and boosting defence exports to counter China's military strength and influence in its neighborhood after their troops clashed on the Himalayan border in 2020.

India's exports of defence equipment, including arms and ammunition, have jumped nearly 150% since 2020 to cross $2.40 billion in the fiscal year that ended in March 2024. However, its arms exports are lower than those of nations like Australia and South Korea, and far below those of China, the world's fourth largest arms exporter.

The Philippines' armed forces chief said on Wednesday the country was looking to buy more military hardware to modernize its arsenal, including additional BrahMos missiles from India and at least two submarines.

"We are getting more of this (BrahMos system) this year, and in the coming years," General Romeo Brawner said in a speech to business figures in the Philippines, but did not mention the Akash missile system.

BEL's Electronic fuzes for 155 MM artillery shells.

Pune:
City-based defence public sector undertaking Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) recently secured an order from a European country to supply 50,000 electronic fuses, valued at several crores.

GSN Murthy, BEL general manager, said, "We are receiving several inquiries for fuses from various countries, including European nations. We will soon be supplying 50,000 fuses to a European country. We cannot disclose the name of the country due to confidentiality reasons." BEL officials said they developed fuses for the Indian Navy, while fuses for the Indian Air Force (IAF) are in the development stage.

Murthy added, "We successfully conducted trials of the naval fuses, which are in the final stages of the induction process, but we are yet to receive an official order from the Navy. For the IAF, our design is ready, and the evaluation is still ongoing." In Dec 2023, BEL secured a Rs 4,522 crore contract to supply the Indian Army with 50,000 electronic fuses. Deliveries are scheduled over the next ten years.

Lt Gen Amardeep Singh Aujla, the Master General of Sustenance for the Indian Army, inaugurated a second assembly line at the BEL unit in Pune on Monday to increase the capacity for manufacturing fuses.

"Considering the geopolitical dynamics, technology absorption has become an utmost necessity. We have confidence in BEL and its ability. The additional facility will not only speed up their manufacturing but also create huge scope for export," he said.

Manoj Jain, the chairman and managing director of BEL, said, "With the addition of the second assembly line, we will be able to produce 500,000 fuses annually. Therefore, we are confident we can deliver the fuses to the Army by the deadline."

Electronic fuses play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of artillery shells during handling, storage, and transportation, as well as during detonation.

Currently, BEL manufactures three types of fuses compatible with 105mm, 130mm, and 155mm artillery guns, and the company is committed to delivering these fuses to the Indian Army on schedule.

"We have a strong research and development team which is capable of producing customized requirements of global players," added Jain. On the semiconductors supply challenge, Jain said, "It has remained a challenge for us, and it is the fact that we cannot manufacture them. So, dependency is there but the line of supply is smooth. Therefore, we will be able to meet our targets."

BEL boasts over 600 products in the areas of radars and fire control systems, communication and networks, electronic warfare and avionics, etc.
