As part of the Japan-India joint training "Veer Guardian 26," Air Self-Defense Force Chief of Staff Masahiro Morita and Indian Air Force Chief of Air Staff A.P. Singh visited Jodhpur Air Force Base and boarded India's domestically produced fighter jet #Tejas.

Chief of Air Staff Singh, as "Eagle One," led a formation flight in the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), while Chief of Staff Morita boarded the two-seater Tejas.

According to HAL, SPT7 and SPT8 incorporate improvements to their onboard autopilot and fuel systems, as well as a domestically developed software-defined radio (SDR), “enabling secure communications during operations”.

Janes understands from an industry source that HAL's Strategic Electronics Research and Development Centre (SLRDC) and the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) developed the SDR system. The source declined to provide further details because of security concerns.

According to the source, SPT7 and SPT8 have also been integrated with the Elta EL/M-2052 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar and an air-to-air refuelling probe. Both systems will also equip the follow-on Tejas Mk 1A aircraft for the IAF.

“These features were integrated into SPT7 and SPT8 because the IAF wanted to use these last two FOC two-seaters as lead-in trainers for the Tejas Mk 1A,” the source said.

Defence Secretary RK Singh at NDTV defence summit:
11th engine delivered. 4 each in October-December 2026. 27 airframes ready, 16 fitted with Cat-B engines. 27 have been flown and ready for induction. IAF should be able to induct at least one full squadron by the end of year.

IAF and HAL to meet after mid-October to finalise Tejas Mk1A induction

NEW DELHI: The Indian Air Force (IAF) and state-run Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) will hold the final review meeting on the much-delayed Tejas Mk1A fighter after mid-October, with only two to three "minor" glitches in the jet's radar now left to be ironed out.

"The meeting will take place only when HAL comes with its final update on the pending issues. It is this assessment that will decide the induction timeline," a top official in the defence establishment told TNIE.

The review was earlier slated for September. "Most of the integration work has been completed," the official said. "There are just two-three minor issues with the radar, which are being worked on."

The Israeli EL/M-2052 AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar has to mesh seamlessly with the jet's weapon firing controls and its Angad electronic warfare suite. Once that is done, the jet will still need the final nod from the military airworthiness regulator CEMILAC.

"The first batch of jets will be taken to Sulur and the first full-fledged Mk1A squadron will be raised at Nal," the official added. Sulur in Tamil Nadu houses the IAF's first Tejas Mk1 squadron, the 'Flying Daggers', while Nal in Rajasthan's Bikaner district is located close to the western front with Pakistan. The IAF expects to induct the first jets within this financial year.
