India - United States Relations

In all fairness, Biden was a rubber stamp president. Trump's 180 deg turnaround on China and India was something nobody could've anticipated.

In his first term, he was the guy who authorized the sale of armed MQ-9Bs to India, something even Obama had refused to do.

Since then, Trump has clearly realized that decoupling from China isn't going to be easy (rare earths for example) and penalizing India on trade and immigration helps his approval ratings.

Plus US strategic policy is being re-written by first-timers like DefSec Pete Hegseth who seems focused on securing the Western hemisphere/US homeland while using regime change + mercenary states/rent boys like Pak to control the rest.

The trade deal is stalled pending results of the mid term polls. If the Republicans do badly as expected all fresh deals like the FTA are off the table for the rest of the duration of this administration.

I'd go so far as to say if the Democrats manage a landslide Trump could well be impeached.

The Democrats can't be seen as backing down on correcting perceived trade imbalances. They were all in on the recent legislation that gave Trump discretionary tariff powers.

By the looks of things, the Dems would seek to continue to chip away at our redlines in terms of agri, dairy, etc. Our wait for a more advantageous tarriff rate vs other Asian exporters is going to be a long one.

Recent russia sanctions bill passed in congress had bipartisan support, every one knew that it wouldnt do damn thing against russia without sanctioning china.

More over after a decade or so trying to capture India's agri market (which led to supporting farmers protest) , India's inaction against china , trying to develop a native defence manufacturing eco system ...etc has made US realize that India gamble is nearly done. Coups in BD and Nepal was just the confirmation.

Even thought current govt has not lived to its expectations of delivering the results on economic growth or reforms they have managed to quite stubbornly defend itself against the co-ordinated western attack to destabilize and remove Modi from power.

Trumps policy is nothing but continuation of Biden's policy albeit without the diplomatic finesse. While Biden dint overtly state the aim , Trump has been fully let loose. Sooner or later we will have our ukraine moment via pakistan. There will be more chaos & anarchy in the region, they want to put a lid on economic growth of both china & India.
So many conspiracy theories. Lmao. Not worth engaging.
Biden treated India with velvet gloves. People still are finding conspiracy theories to put him down. Topi ji did everything to suck upto Trump, only for him to treat topi ji like his b!tch. You are putting Biden & Trump on same pedestal. Haha incredible!!!

US sanctions Indian companies over alleged maritime fraud aiding Iran

The United States on Wednesday issued sanctions targeting what it described as a “vast criminal network” run by two Indian nationals that was aiding Iran’s shadow fleet of oil tankers in committing maritime fraud.

In a statement, the US Treasury said the network aided Iranian vessels in sailing under false flags and in gaining fake maritime certifications.

The move was the latest in a tightening web of US sanctions targeting Iran since August, when Washington announced that it would be seeking the “economic asphyxiation” of the country in conjunction with its military campaign.

The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran in late February, plunging the Middle East into violence as Tehran’s retaliatory action struck US allies and closed a vital energy trade waterway.

“As we have said many times, under Operation Economic Outcast, you are either with us or against us,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who has in the past threatened sanctions against any country or company that aids Iran, regardless of its relationship with Washington.

“We know where you are, and we will sanction those who continue supporting the Iranian regime, whether by land, sea, or air.”

Wednesday’s sanctions named Indian nationals Suniel Kumar Sharma and his wife Jaspreet Preeti Shahid as operating a large-scale maritime fraud network from their base in Chandigarh.

“Purporting to represent nations from nearly every continent, from Guyana to Eswatini and Laos, Sharma and Shahid have allowed the Iranian shadow fleet… to evade international restrictions on their operation,” the Treasury said in a statement.

The sanctions also targeted two other Indian nationals and a number of companies Treasury said were part of the criminal network.

Wednesday’s action also saw Washington sanction Turkey-based Fugo Ground Services Inc for allegedly continuing to provide services to Iran’s aviation sector, which the United States has sought to shut down.

Earlier this month, the United States imposed sanctions targeting “the remnants of Iran’s shadow fleet” of tankers used to transport oil products to foreign markets, affecting 17 vessels.
