India-US Relations

What happens to the Rafales then ? We would keep it capped to just 36 ? In a few years this fleet would be a nightmare to maintain.
Also the F-15 falls in the Su-30's class !! Either way the IAF's inventory is fuc**d. Then the Navy would get either Rafales or F-18s. 😒

I think if we are going for F-15s we should go all the way. Get not a few but hundreds of them. The same with Rafales, just 36 makes no sense. I don't see a way out of this quagmire without some drastic steps.
We can't afford F15ex. Although Boeing would be extremely pleased if IAF buys F15s and IN SHs but I don't think that would happen. Although BECA has surely improved the chance of SHs to land on the inventory of both IAF and IN drastically. But that could only happen if the MRFA and MRCBF materialises.

Wiki says F-15EX is 138 million per piece. What was the unit price of the Rafales again ? I don't remember.
88 million dollars in our case.
Btw USA is buying 8 jets for 1.2 billion dollars that puts the cost of one F15EX to 150 million dollars.

There were rumours about India buying a small number of American jets, and most of those were centered around 36 SHs for the navy. So it's possible that it may be the F-15EX instead.

@Lolwa's and @Hydra's dreams may come true.

But I'd still take it with a pinch of salt.
It ain't happening. Growlers would make sense. Since that was the rumour I heard for 12 aircrafts. 36 f15EX are useless a 114 deal would atleast will make sense. 36 growlers though...

This Article talks of F 15 EX for IAF
Procuring small batch of F15EX through GtoG deal means only one thing, they would be used in light bomber role.
I don't think IAF wants that, if this deal really materialises then it would entirely be a political deal.

Good for india if we go for f15 EX in large numbers.

Hence the salt intake needed as per taste. The sources in the article are anonymous, hence of significantly lower importance.

Rafales will come in through MRFA. MRFA is not going anywhere. In case a deal with America is signed for the F-15 or even the F-16 or SH outside of MRFA, it won't be any more than 2 squadrons. MRFA requirement is 114+57.

Anyway, the IAF won't buy anything without testing it first. We are not Qatar.

Also, at $6.2B for 36 F-15QA (not the EX), we can instead buy 36 more Rafale F3R and still save $1B. So the choice is between common sense and politics. Let's see what route we take for our next emergency purchase.

Growler is not a first day of war aircraft, hence it's a liability.

Also, we won't get anything that makes the Growler the Growler, most of it is not exportable tech.

We use business jets with 12-hour endurance for EW instead.

They could make a case for us. So growlers if exported will be completely useless??

Honestly a 72 aircraft deal would be good for the f15EX it will be a good replacement for our mig27,mig23 and jaguars. The rafale has a strong case for the mmrca contest but the f15EX also has its place and fills a certain niche in the air force. You may disagree but that's what I feel..

Of course it will be useless. It's already not a first day of war aircraft like it used to be. And pretty much all of it is no longer in production.

The USN needs it because they can't fly anything else off their carriers. But air forces don't.

If India does buy something from the US, my top choice would C17's if they are willing to make some more at Long Beach. Additional C130's too are welcome.

@randomradio @lowa this US request can be taken as dictating our autonomy, but again when you became a part an agreement something we have to compromise to get the job done.

Lastly @vstol Jockey swamy is it true or what? Are we loose deapang to Chinese completely? Or a part of it?
We have not lost Depsang but so called strategic analysts have completely ignored the gains we have made in Chusul area and kailash range.

There is no c17 for sale i fear. Why would USAF sell their c17 from their inventory?

Since no production line exist in USA, we dont get new c17 from usa too.

In my mind another plan was there, just a fancy and unrealistic plan. We need to replace our aging IL76 fleet any way and our fleet consist of 26 of these, and we need another 20 awacs too. So total heavy category aircrafts we will be requiring is 40+. If mod & our government is wise enough, we need to push for a production line of c17 in India to satisfy replacing 26 IL76 & 20 mor customized c17s for our AWACS requirements.
