DRDO's CHESS has invited Indian firms to develop a new multi-kW Spectral Beam Combined (SBC) laser weapon to counter UAVs, building on lessons from Operation Sindoor. The selected firm must complete development and integration within 240 days. DRDO will retain the IP, with no guaranteed production contract.
The project aims to advance beyond DRDO's 30 kW-class laser, which has demonstrated the ability to neutralise drones and swarms at ranges of up to 5 km. The 2 kW system is already in production, while the Army and IAF are planning to procure the 10 kW system, with a range of up to 2 km. L&T and BEL are DcPPs for the 10 kW system, while Apollo Micro Systems has received technology-transfer approval.
