Interesting things afoot in the East...here's a summary:

  • Mizoram MP visits Chinland Council (rebel alliance that controls Myanmar's Chin State region), says he informed Assam Rifles & Mizoram Governor VK Singh (former COAS) before going
  • Offers the Chinland rebels to join the Indian Union, cites common heritage with Mizo tribal groups
  • Says will brief MHA, MEA on talks held

Of course we have to assume he only went there & initiated these talks at the behest of the Indian Govt. Now if we were to believe that India is considering absorption of the Chin State province of Myanmar into our North-East, we'd have to assume that the next logical step would be to improve relations with the Arakan Army (another rebel group that controls the Rakhine State province).

As shown above, Rakhine contains the Sittwe port - if it even becomes an autonomously-governed part of India, we'd essentially fulfill the dream of getting our North-East access to the Sea, without having to go through Bangladesh.

Of course we should be careful about incorporating territories that are Rohingya-majority. Don't need that headache, the illegal ones we have already are more than enough.

Excellent analysis👍👏. This is exactly what we need to do. Our own (sea) link to North-East without having to go through Bangladesh will have strategic implications in our benefit which we must reap at any cost, IMO.

I don't know how to feel about this.

Several issues here:

1) We will be absorbing rebel groups which may result in a Manipur-esque situation.

2) I don't know if the communities in NE will accept the Rohingyas and that may also lead to a conflict.

3) Won't this pretty much tear down our relationship with Myanmar? We are also making a road project through Myanmar to other SEA countries, that might get disrupted.

4) I don't think the people on the Myanmar side will also prefer India as their country.

1. The rebels are tired of fighting, they want peace and quiet.
3. The govt have no hopes of reconquering Chin and Rakhine. India bringing in stability will mean they can concentrate on securing other interests.
4. If the Junta is compelled to agree, the people in Myanmar will hav to accept it as well. There will be future trouble, but as long as we bring developing to reclaimed regions, any foreign claims will not have any sway on the people there.

2. is a problem. But the population is small and is easily relocated.

Many of the Rohingyas who left are unlikely to return due to the danger of being sandwiched between warring tribes.

But Chins if I am not wrong are part of Kuki gang. If not islamists then it will be another Christian harvesting souls headache.
We already have enough of Christians problem especially in North East.

We have a foreign interference problem, not a Christianity problem.

The govt's already offering so many benefits that conversion has become less and less enticing every year.

In any case, we need a census to tell us if we have a conversion problem or not.
