Polish Military Modernisation : News & Discussions

Leopard not working out?

Can't blame them if that's the case - personally I'd choose the SEP(v)3 over Leo2A7+. The Leo simply doesn't have as much real-world lessons informing the upgrade programs as the Abrams does.

The Howitzer thing is confusing, they were already doing their AHS Krab program where they used the K9 Thunder as a base. And that production still hasn't been completed.

It would have made sense to continue with extra orders for those only imo. Krab and K9 although share the same chassis, but have radically different gun systems.

The Polish have changed a lot of their existing plans.

It's a new K9 version with autoloader.

Massive overhaul of the Polish Land Forces.

MBT:
116 M1A1 tanks upgraded to M1A2SEPv3
250 new build M1A2SEPv3

180 new build Korean K2 MBTs followed by license production of 820 K2PLs. This will be followed by a joint development of a new K3PL MBT with Korea.

So Poland will replace their old Soviet and German tanks with these 2 tanks. So about 1400 tanks in all.

SPH:
48 new indigneous Polish Krabs to add to the 100+ they already operate.

48 K9A1
652 K9A2 called K9PL. The K9A1s will also be upgraded to K9PL.

That's around 850 SPHs.

Not mentioned in the article--

1400 Korean K21 IFVs to be license produced.

500+ HIMARS launchers on Polish trucks and the Polish Topaz ICMS. There may be interest in the Korean K239 as well.

23 batteries of British CAMM-based air defences called Narew.

5% of their GDP, a lesson we must learn & impliment immediately.
GDP per capita of Poland is 15.5 K USD. 50% more rich than even average Chinese. They can do it. We cannot.

Good investment in Land and Airforce. But not much vis a vis Navy.

We can. For a large chunk of our history, our ratio was also pretty high, with the max being 6%. It was only after 1991 that our spending started falling and even the exchange rate fell drastically killing our import potential.

But if things go bad for us, like it has for Poland, we can replicate it. We will have to incentivise private and foreign investment while govt spending goes into defence. Although, right now, just increasing capex by 50% will solve our problems, 'cause we are already sitting on a higher base.

This could only be the beginning.

They don't need a large navy due to NATO. The Russian threat from the sea isn't that strong, but they have a plan.

They may expand the size of their air force to a few hundred after the F-35 deliveries begin. These new FA-50s are likely meant to support the army.

Correction: 1400 Borsuks, which is a mix of K9 hull and a new turret.

And an unknown number of K21-derived AS21 Redback.

Polish military is going to become one of the most powerful military in the Europe at this rate.
This what wise leadership will do when you have an aggressive military siting next to you. Here we have send ignorant idiots to Parliament, they were not all brothers about the ground reality.

In the past two years only, Poland has signed the following deals:

K2PL = 1000
M1A2 SEPv3 = 366
K9PL = 672
K239 Chunmoo = 288
M142 HIMARS = 506
BWP Borsuk = 1400
Narew = 22 batteries
Patriot PAC-3 MSE = 48 launchers + 644 missiles

It is just mind blowing to see such massive contracts one after another.

this is how a country with single hostile neighborhood will react.
Do you know how a country with two hostile neighborhood will act? Delay, tender, controversy, fake indigenization mantra blah blah blah.

You can't become a military superpower with imported weapons. For short term, they are fine but not good for long term solution.

I find our approach of importing high-tech/exotic weapons where there are no desi substitutes along with trying to indigenize other low/medium tech weapons; a very nice one. By using this process, we are slowly but surely developing our MIC and heading towards the goal of self-reliance in defence.

PS: With all these exotic weapons can Poland still beat Russia 1 on 1? Ask yourself this question and you shall find the answer that you're looking for;)
