Rafale DH/EH of Indian Air Force : News and Discussions

Absolutely. Now the Indian factory is fully-owned by Dassault. So they can easily fulfil our order using their Indian facility. But perhaps we need to order more than 36 for that to happen🤷‍♂️
They can make indian Rafale M in that line. But not mmrca. GOI will insist an indian partner.

The Dassault CEO answer is always the same : a minimum of 90 birds to create an assembly line.
Now that there is a (small) factory already in India, the minimum level may be short. 60? 70?

Dassault Aviation to sign Rafale Marine contract in India by the end of 2024

Dassault Aviation has a very good chance of signing a Rafale export contract in India by the end of the year. Negotiations are finalized, with the exception of those with MBDA. Which is delaying the signing of the transaction.

"I think we can expect another contract (Rafale, editor's note) before the end of the year. I hope so," said the CEO of Dassault Aviation on radio Europe 1 on Saturday evening just two days after signing the contract in Serbia (12 Rafale). A short sentence that is far from insignificant coming from Eric Trappier, who of course did not mention the country with which he was in negotiations, nor the number of aircraft under discussion. This country is most certainly India, which announced in July 2023 the selection of the Rafale Marine to equip the Indian Navy.

And according to concordant sources, the French aircraft manufacturer and its partners from Team Rafale (Thales and Safran) have finalized discussions with New Delhi for the sale of 26 Rafale Marine. Especially since the equipment manufacturer has once again mastered the technology of reinforced landing gear (titanium) to meet the conditions of landing and catapulting. Contacted by La Tribune, Dassault Aviation did not wish to comment.

Second hand Rafale?

Eric Trappier's little phrase also demonstrates the aircraft manufacturer's confidence in the decisive progress with India, which has already purchased 36 Rafale for the Indian Air Force in 2016. Aircraft that have already all been delivered. But Dassault Aviation must still wait for the end of negotiations between MBDA, which would delay the conclusion of this transaction. The European missile manufacturer is renegotiating under the benevolence of the Ministry of the Armed Forces, according to our information, certain clauses relating to the prices of missiles (inflation, in particular). Which is not insignificant in a country like India where this type of negotiation can last...

In this transaction with the Indian authorities, it is possible that France will sell one or two second-hand Rafale Marines among the 26 units. They could be used to train Indian naval pilots. In addition, this contract could also allow the French Navy, which has three Rafale flotillas (36 aircraft out of a fleet of 41) to order new aircraft to replace the first Rafale Marines that entered service in 2002 as well as the four that crashed.

Aboard the INS Vikrant

The Indian Navy had expressed an initial need for 26 aircraft to equip its aircraft carrier INS Vikrant "Made in India". The tricolor combat aircraft will allow the Indians to have a homogeneous fleet between the Rafale Air and the Rafale Marine. New Delhi received the last aircraft of the order of 36 Rafales in December 2022. The two Indian Rafale squadrons are fully operational. The Rafale Marine trials were decisive in the choice made by for the French aircraft manufacturer. In January 2022, it took part in trials in January in Goa on a land platform, which served as a springboard and was adapted to the configuration of an Indian aircraft carrier in terms of size.

Export sales of the Rafale have exceeded those of the Mirage 2000 (286 aircraft sold for export). To date, Dassault Aviation and France have firmly sold 297 Rafales, including 24 second-hand (55 to Egypt, 36 to Qatar, 36 to India, 24 to Greece, including 12 second-hand, 80 to the United Arab Emirates, 12 second-hand to Croatia, 42 to Indonesia and 12 to Serbia). Adding the 26 Rafale Marines in India, the French combat aircraft will have sold 323 units. On the commercial front, Dassault Aviation is having "a real Rafale moment, which is lasting", Eric Trappier often repeats. India will prove him right again. /deepl
