New Delhi: A Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) employee was arrested on Monday from BrahMos missile unit in Maharashtra's Nagpur for allegedly leaking technical secrets to Pakistan.

The accused has been identified as Nishant Agrawal, who is said to be working at Brahmos Aerospace unit since four years. He has been booked under the Official Secrets Act. Police said it is investigating the matter further.

Nishant Agarwal was arrested in a joint operation by the Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squads (ATS) at DRDO's Wardha Road facility in Nagpur.

The engineer was living in a rented accommodation on Wardha Road since the last year, his landlord Manohar Kale told PTI.

ATS IG, Aseem Arun said, "Very sensitive information was found on his personal computer. We also found evidence of him chatting on Facebook with Pakistan-based operators."

Last month, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) had arrested a BSF jawan from Noida on the charge of sharing vital information with Pakistan ISI agents.

Achutanand Misra, hailing from Madhya Pradesh’s Rewa district, was "honey-trapped" into sharing information about unit operational details, police academy and training centre by a woman who claimed to be a defence reporter.

An Uttarakhand resident was also arrested in May for helping Pakistan’s spy agency, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), get entry into the house of the Indian diplomat in Islamabad on a number of occasions.

The accused, Ramesh Singh, who used to work as a cook at a former Indian diplomat’s house in 2015, also allowed ISI agents to park their cars outside the diplomat's house for hours.

NAGPUR: Sleuths of the ATS Uttar Pradesh and military intelligence have detained a young engineer of BrahMos Aerospace, a joint venture organisation of Indian and Russian governments, which has its key unit in Nagpur. The engineer (in his mid-twenties) was identified as Nishant Agrawal and was working with the organisation for the last four years. He is suspected of passing technical information related to missile technology to Pakistani and US intelligence agencies. Sources say he has been booked under the Official Secrets Act.

The action in Nagpur is a follow-up of the arrest of three persons which included an ISI agent and two DRDO employees in Kanpur. The cops who had grilled the trio, found that they were in contact with Agrawal. The ISI agent had established contact with him through Facebook using a fake name, said a source.

Following the probe, it was suspected that Agrawal had been passing on the details to the ISI agent who was arrested in Kanpur. The ATS officers had contacted his seniors at the BrahMos Aerospace office, saying that he would be picked up for questioning.

Lol! As if they're gonna really do anything with it. It's like giving our detailed drawings to Zimbabwe or something.

“He was supervising the new projects at BrahMos’s Nagpur and Pilani facilities and was privy to a lot of sensitive information. The handlers seem to be interested in getting information on the new technology that was being developed jointly by India and Russia. We suspect it is related to the seekers, but we are still probing. Our probe will also concentrate on whether Aggarwal was lured by only Pakistani’s ISI or any other foreign intelligence agency which is interested in technology developed by Russia,” said the official.

Let's wait before passing any judgements. Our police chaps have bungled before. Knowing their intelligence levels and media circus, we should wait for the investigation to get complete.

What we know?
1. He was carrying confidential information on his personal laptop.
2. He shared confidential information with someone.

There are multiple questions here.

1. He was carrying data on personal laptop. Is this an unsaid norm? I do not know. If it was, then the security experts in BrahMos need to be whipped and relevant criminal cases filed against them. If its not the norm, then why was the copying of data not detected at source. Again, the security experts at BrahMos need to be whipped.

2. Did he knowingly give data to another country's agency or did he believe he was interviewing for any of the private sector companies in India? Whatever the scenario, he is guilty. Though the sentencing may be differ.

3. What was the data shared? Was it critical data or was it publicly known information, which was for a job interview. If data was not critical and what he shared was generic information which could be known by an expert, he is not guilty of espionage.

4. Did he receive compensation for any of the data shared? If yes, then the case is more or less closed.

Let us be clear, "Very sensitive information was found on his personal computer. We also found evidence of him chatting on Facebook with Pakistan-based operators."

None of the above suggests he shared actual information. They suspect he did.

But, even before they take action against him for gross negligence of duty, the entire security experts at BrahMos Aerospace needs their asses handed to them with a saliya in it.

Who told you that any one person can have complete information on any item. No matter how sensitive, entire blueprint does not exist with lower level officer like him. Even higher level officers don't have these data. It is available only in secured rooms and secured computers

Nishant Agrawal, who worked at the Nagpur facility of the missile programme, had reportedly been interacting with two Facebook accounts, operated under the names "Neha Sharma" and "Pooja Ranjan", the UP police's Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) said while seeking the court's permission for Mr Agrawal's questioning in Lucknow.

Didn't it occur to anyone of these 'geniouses' that why the hell all of likes for pics posted on FB are coming from Govt of India employees and especially Defence employees?

I suggest a counter to this tactic. Lets start making fake FB profiles with fictitious names and label them to be from DRDO, ADA etc etc etc and see how these ISI agents work. This sword can cut both ways. Make some fake documents, some fake aircraft and missile design documents etc and dump their entire 'craft' which they play grooming these idiots. Will be heck of fun.

There would be one case certainly, misrepresenting and forgery.. using someone else photos to pass off as your own.. rest,,, lets see how it goes.

From what I have learnt, he hasn't leaked anything substantial. He installed a malware sent by his "female" friend on Facebook which crept into his system and stole some of his files one of which was a "User Manual" which was the most priority file in his system. He had very limited access to the confidential information (confirmed by an ATS Operative) and he was not working on part of ISI. He was just trapped in their nexus which was made easy after he revealed all his credentials on Facebook flaunting himself.

Moreover, he is is still an accused, not a convict and we should not jump to media trials too often. Even Aseem Arun, ATS Chief didn't mention that he shared any data with his Pakistani friends but just mentioned that he used to chat with them. We must not judge too quickly and remember what happened with former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan and how he was subjected to by Kerala Police.
