There have been articles in outlets like swarajya, which say, that the difference in fertility rate in Kerala ( 1.9 for muslims, and 1.4 for hindus, which is 36 percent higher for muslims). does not match the difference in live births... Especially in kerala, where the number of live births of hindu children is almost the same as the number of live births of Muslim children, even though there are half as many muslims as Hindus, hence implying that muslim fertility rate is actually much higher than 1.9 (below replacement level) for muslims in kerala.
But, one needs to see that in 1991, Hindu TFR in kerala was 1.6, and Muslim TFR was 2.97... So, Muslim TFR was almost double that of Hindu TFR, which has been below replacement levels for decades.. So, for decades there are about twice the number of women of child bearing age among muslims as compared to hindus, in any sample.. That explains why Muslim live births in kerala are the same as Hindu live births even though the fertility rate for muslims is only 36 percent higher..
