Anyways, Rafale is Modi gov's big and controversial acquistion so they'll stand by it. All the OSINT channels are pretty much telling what Su-30MKI + BrahMos combo did. That is, literal shock and awe making Pakistan bend on its knees and pleade surrender/cease fire.
No matter what TV guys say, those who track these stuff now literally know the potency of BrahMos-A. Period.
HAL will get clarity about the MKI upgrade D&D program in next 6 months. Actual order of the 84 aircraft is 5 years away which is the timeline for IOC.

According to Data Patterns, this approval for a jammer pod costing 7,400 cr is outside of the MLU upgrade program. This will be done in the next 5 years concurrently, from the looks of it.
Thinking about it, even DR-118 Dhruti isn't that old or outdated and we're now moving on to the next big thing, i.e. Yodha & Anidra. With GaN ESM/ECM pods(yes, our ASPJ has both functions), looks like RWR may also would have gotten GaN HEMT update(for better interoperability with the HBJ pods), that's why it has such a large intercept window(1GHz-40GHz). So much foucus on enhancing MKI's EW even before MLU speaks volumes about its importance for us and the importance to dominate the EM spectrum in future aerial warfare IMO.
From what I know, the 12 new ones will have some airframe changes and should incorporate MAWS. Dr. Das too confirmed in AI 25 that MKI will have MAWS in future(same as MK2). Anyways, take the above info with a pinch of salt.

Also are there any plans for developing escort jammers? All airborne jammers we have made so far are SPJs.

Seems like IAF is happy with SAP-14 pods. But sooner or later, we would need GaN based Escort-Jammers as well. So only a matter of time that DRDO develops such a pod, IMO
That's just one element though. By now, the IAF should've moved forward with a MAWS solution for MKI. Heck, even Mi-17s are getting them.
Masking issues et all can be compensated for by tactics. Just use the podded config for now and upgrade to the 6-unit config when testing is complete. Hats off to our pilots for flying over hostile Pak territory w/o a half-decent MAWS.
Agreed. MAWS integration has been a total fvck up by both IAF & DRDO. But now that Dr. Das himself has confirmed that MKI will have it in future, it's only a matter of time, IMO.
Considering that DRDO IRST tech has advanced to test bed/prototyping stage, MAWS shouldn't be too far behind. But all we've seen so far are schematics and mock-ups/displays at air shows.

Su-30MKI is our real ace. Rest assured that we will upgrade all of these in different batches, with each batch having more capability upgrade over the previous. We may even increase the order from 12 to 40(or more) in UPG. configuration.
IAF now realizes this that no light-weight or medium-weight jet can substitute for a true heavy-weight like MKI. I always have said this and will say it again that when the balloon goes up, MKI is going to be our biggest heavy-hitter and two-front war ace.
rest at different time gradually, batch by batch upgrades are rolled out as and when IAF send. You have to consider operational nos. Plus ROH work, engines etc. So IAF sends in small batches.
each jet also needs insurance coverage for the period under upgrade/maintenance and that amount is roughly 800-1000cr per jet sort of LD provision. So there needs to be a balance against the no of jets you can work on at a certain period, even different from capacity utilization, availability of LRU items etc.
The IAF has ambitious plans for MKI, including integration of next-gen tech like MUM-T which need time to mature. They want to keep it flying till 2055.
Fact remains we need to reactivate the nashik facility and produce around 150-200 mki upg with virupaksha,r-37m, ngj pod, gandiv, al-41 and stealth coating. All mki's need to be overhauled with al-41 engine.
There should be around 350-450 mki's with capability to fire a variety of alcm's and stand off munitions.
The mk1a needs to be pushed around 300-600 aircrafts. With Mk1b with new 90-95kN kaveri 2 engine, mumt, mk2 and nato weapons integration.
