Indian Defense Industry General News and Updates

There is news that the forces are ordering AK630 for counter drone operations. Is there any news on the CIWS projects that were being pursued by DRDO and others? The last news that I could find about them was this one:

To bolster the surveillance and defense capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF), the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has approved deals worth around Rs 13,000 crore for new high-power radars and close-in weapon systems (CIWS) from the Indian company Larsen & Toubro.

The CCS, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared the acquisition of the radars under a project worth around Rs 6,000 crore.

Additionally, a significant project to develop a Made in India Close-in Weapon System (CIWS), based on a derivative of air defence gun technology, has been approved.

This system aims to offer robust defence for vital assets against drone and aircraft threats. The project is worth around Rs 7,000 crore.

Larsen & Toubro, in collaboration with various Indian small and medium enterprises, will produce the new radars and CIWS, generating a considerable number of employment opportunities in the defence sector.

Are the DRDO and L&T provided systems not capable of handling Pakistani drone intrusions? The govt. had provided clearance as can be seen in the article.

Rolls Royce is making a big marketing push to get that sweet AMCA engine contract. Idk how sincere they're about manufacturing locally. How bad are their financials anyway?

And here comes the westerners to kill the just conceived aerospace indiginesation in India. RR is a British company. And it will remain so.

I have seen many think exactly like the above line, but it is not always true. Our own Govt is one sly customer irrespective of who is in power, they run a large country so they have to. The reason why some very critical strategic programs are knowingly under funded is precisely this. They want certain things which at first foreign OEMs won't give in their desired terms (including local mfg, high margin, bribe whatever). So certain project like kaveri is knowingly underfunded but still made to work so with the progress made in it, they can chalk out a deal from the reluctant OEM.

So its not always like they do not know what it takes to make a jet engine or a critical tech. Plenty of tech is denied to us for import. Govt side is well aware of the cost it take but prefer to cut a deal process because in this way everyone profit except the domestic capability. Govt get what it wants, foreign OEM do not want to lose business so they do background lobbying in their country, PSU get to build things via license mfg, huge inflated cost paid by taxpayers line up business pocket, scandals break out many years later. Sabka saath sabka vikaash in actual practice.

Just started development. Its 4-5 years away.
The timing is perfect to be honest. The first batch can carry these which are domestically built/assembled. From the specifications and trial performance so far, it seems to match Zorawar's needs. I have not paid attention to the Cummins line-up but was told this is not the very best they can offer. I hope the DRDO does stick to the timeline. Let's see what happens.

India needs to invest more into its colleges and universities when it comes to R&D for Powertrain development. Both Engines and Transmission related grants can aid the GoI it in its quest for 'Make in India' if it truly has ambitions in this sector when it comes to Defence. There are a few places that hold a fair bit of potential but happen to be chronically underfunded.

In 5 years
We can get both , a 1500 HP and a 800 HP for both types of tanks ie light Zorawar type and a 50 ton NG MBT
A person can wish.

If they can strictly adhere to timeline with massive R&D involvement frol leylands ( hire on merit and even from abroad or emigrants).. 5 years is worth it. Those 5 years can save 50 years.
