Japan is deploying eight aircraft, including four F-15 fighter jets, to bases in the United States, Canada and Europe in an unprecedented mission to support NATO.
The mission, dubbed Atlantic Eagles, reportedly marks the first time in history that Japanese warplanes have deployed to Canada and Europe.
A total of 180 personnel drawn from air bases across Japan are taking part, including from the 2nd Air Wing based at Chitose, 1st Tactical Airlift Wing based at Komaki, 2nd Tactical Airlift Group from Iruma and 3rd Tactical Airlift Wing from Miho, according to a Japan Air Self-Defense Force release. The four F-15s are being accompanied by two tanker aircraft and two refueling tankers.
The mission is “based on the recognition that the security of the Euro-Atlantic and of the Indo-Pacific are interconnected,” the Japan Air Self-Defense Force stated in the release.
The new EC-2 Stand-Off Jammer aircraft, based on the Kawasaki C-2 transport aircraft, will replace the unique EC-1 which has been in service since 1986.
hmm is this why the IAF is so adamant about the C-2 to join the MTA? since they want an AWACS capable aircraft?
C2 unlikely to join the tendering proces because of Japanese policy. Can we modify A400M for such role? @randomradio
the a400M was designed from the start to be tanker capable, i think every single a400M can be rapidly reconfigured to a tanker setting.
as for AWACS, it has enough power but would need significant investement into conversion but it was desgined to be modular from the start and it will have high loiter time so its not impossible.
Any transport can be turned into a tanker, and the A400M does the job.
So there exists a possibility of converting A400 m in to EW aircraft, something like EC2 if IAF wants?

With MTA meant to replace even the IL-76, the A400M has also come into favor compared to before. It is increasingly looking like a competition between A400M and C-390.
