A key challenge for delivering the updated single-engined Tejas Mk1A is the supply of the GE Aerospace F404-IN20 engines. Ravi says that the company has completed 22 Mk1As, but that these cannot be delivered owing to a lack of engines.

“We’ve had discussions with [GE Aerospace] over the past year, and they told us that they have supply chain issues. From there we had discussions with some of their Tier One suppliers to understand what exactly is happening,” says Ravi.

He adds those challenges are now moving toward a resolution.

“They had issues with castings and some suppliers, but I had a good meeting with their top president, where they [said] that the issues are behind them. It’s only a matter of time for everything to get assembled and delivered. This year they promised me 22 engines.

Ravi confirms that HAL continues to develop the Tejas programme’s follow-on aircraft, the LCA Mk2. Assembly continues with the first prototype, with a first flight likely between March and July 2027.

Ravi also has broader ambitions for the company.

“We need to make products for the world…but first we must deliver for [our existing customers]. Once they are satisfied, then it is easy to market the products outside the country.”
Not entirely true. Software integration with avionics and the radar has been the reason why even 1 MK1A has not been delivered. Israeli radar has not been fully integrated with the bvr missiles.

I have a very basic doubt.

Is this radar have TSA or Dipole antenna unit ? And how many T/R modules ? And elm-2052 features LPI mode ?

Uttam for Mk1a will have 912 T/R module, but don't know about this one.

And how this elm-2052 compared to KLJ-7a on JF17 block 3 ?

I asked gemini, and it says that KLJ-7a is a GaN on SiC with 1000+ T/R module for JF17-3, which i doubt very much.

So if any one know, then please tell me.

LCA Mk1/Mk1A 186kW peak power accessory gearbox

It produces that output at 16,810rpm.

The casing is made of Magnesium RZ-5. The internal gears are made of a high quality Russian steel alloy named 12Х2Н4А-Ш which is manufactured using electroslag-remelting.

It is rated for 100Nm torque sustained and 372Nm starting torque.

It can hold +9g to -5.25g load for 60 seconds.

Operating temperature is -54°C to +125°C.

For comparison, the JF-17 from what I know makes around 125kW, so about 2/3rd power as this...

I had used these figures in a comment which was about some people saying stuff about Tejas being underpowered..

The Mk2 should likely have something closer to 350+kW peak output.

Not even a comparison

JF17 uses air cooled radar, so its limited by peak power and would be headache logistics wise.

Not to mention, RD93 is horrible compared to F404IN20

In 2021, when the Indian Air Force (IAF) ordered 83 LCA Mk1A multirole fighter jets from HAL in a Rs 48,000 crore deal, the latter had committed to integrating indigenous radar and EW systems for the last 43 aircraft, or from the 41st LCA Mk1A. However, in a volte face, HAL in March 2025 decided to put in radar and EW systems from ELTA, the supplier for the first 40 aircraft, for those final 43 aircraft as well. Though HAL was to start delivering LCA Mk1As from February 2024, not a single aircraft has materialised.

An HAL official attributed the decision to the delayed certification of the DRDO’s radar and EW suite by the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC). “We have the imported radar as the DRDO radar and EW suite are not certified for production by CEMILAC completely,” a key HAL official tells india today. HAL had issued a tender in November 2024 for 43 Uttam radars for the LCA Mk1A, making its U-turn all the more unexpected. A DRDO official acknowledges delays in conducting trials of the EW suite due to the non-availability of suitable test aircraft but claims that CEMILAC had certified the radar for production last year. The official adds that the DRDO had requested HAL for more time and that a final decision was yet to be taken.

Didn't CEMILAC certified RADAR already? Was EW not certified? And why is DRDO not having a dedicated LSP of Tejas while Israeli are having two?

I got confused when your mentioned "this country", thought you are talking about F-35. Your country is delivering F-35 without radars now.

On topic, EW suite and radar need to be synced to work together. Otherwise there will be interference. Its a long process.

MKI flew with this issue of russian radar and israeli EW pod for decades. What we have with LCA is fixable.

I am more bothered about DRDO not having completed certification of indegenous EW suite and radar and blaming not having LSP planes to do so. What kind of circus is that?
 

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed an indigenous radome for the light combat aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A, paving the way for replacing imported radomes currently used on the fighter aircraft.

The technology, developed by the Research and Development Establishment (Engineers) [R&DE(E)], Pune, has successfully met all structural, mechanical and electromagnetic performance requirements and is now ready for transfer to industry for production.

“We are in the process of conducting flight trials. This will be the final assesment, but the crucial thing is that our technology has met all requirements of the IAF during multiple evaluation trials,” a senior DRDO official told TOI.

“The technology has been developed to eliminate dependence on imported radomes and support the growing production of the LCA Mk1A. It complies with all mechanical and electrical requirements specified for the aircraft’s operating environment,” DRDO officials said.

Designed as a conical composite structure with variable thickness, the radome is integrated with the aircraft’s front fuselage through a bolted metallic interface ring. It incorporates provisions for mounting the nose air data probe (NADP) and features a lightning protection system compliant with military standards.

“One of the key achievements of the programme is the use of advanced composite materials and indigenous manufacturing processes. The radome has been built using a monolithic fibre-reinforced polymer composite structure with quartz fibre reinforcement and cyanate ester resin matrix. It has been manufactured using the resin film infusion (RFI) process, which enables high structural quality and dimensional accuracy,” added the officials.

“Its outer surface has been coated with an electromagnetic-transparent anti-static paint that also provides rain erosion resistance, a crucial requirement for sustained fighter operations,” added the officials.

The radome also incorporates diverter strips for lightning protection, ensuring safe operation of the aircraft’s sensitive radar and avionics during adverse weather conditions.

The availability of a domestically developed radome is expected to reduce import dependence, strengthen the supply chain for the LCA Mk1A programme and provide long-term support for future variants of the Tejas fighter.

“With production of LCA Mk1A gathering pace and additional orders expected in the coming years, the indigenous radome technology is likely to play a key role in ensuring uninterrupted manufacturing while enhancing India’s capability in advanced aerospace composite technologies, “ a senior IAF officer said.

Beyond Tejas Mk1A, the expertise developed through this programme could support future platforms, including Tejas Mk2, advanced medium combat aircraft (AMCA) and other airborne surveillance systems requiring specialised composite radomes.

So the first 58 frames are going to be the ELM radar
Probably, but given there would be a lead time in manufacturing of the first radar sets I wonder how is that going to align with HAL's production output of Mk1A airframes as more than 30 Mk1A have already been built and test flown and I wouldn't be surprised if they were to roll-out the 60th Tejas Mk1A sometime next year.

It could also be the case that some of the 122 radar sets have been ordered as spares for testing,etc.
