HAL revives Su-30MKI production at Nashik
New Delhi: Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd is reviving production of Su-30MKI fighter jets at its Nashik facility, with 12 new aircraft to be delivered by 2029. The facility, which has traditionally produced Russian-origin fighter aircraft, is also producing the indigenous light combat aircraft.
As per current plans, the first new Su-30MKI will be delivered in 2027-28. HAL has previously produced 222 of the jets under licence from Russia for the Air Force. In December 2024, an order for 12 additional jets was signed to replace aircraft lost in accidents. The ₹11,000-crore order will see HAL manufacture the jets with more than 50% indigenous content.
The facility is also likely to execute a comprehensive upgrade of the existing Su-30MKI fleet. The ₹60,000-crore upgrade could be undertaken with support from DRDO, with several major components to be procured from the private sector.
The project is likely to be carried out in two phases. The first will involve new avionics and radars while the second will focus on flight control systems. The upgrade may include a new indigenous radar that will enable the aircraft to detect and engage targets at much greater distances. The radar in older jets had been a concern for IAF. In the first phase, the aircraft will also get a new electronic warfare system to jam incoming threats.
The jets are also set to receive new infrared search-and-track systems that will enhance their ability to engage targets.

The proposal is being taken up for consideration by the Defence Ministry just a few days before tha arrival of Russian President Vladimir Putin for the BRICS meeting, and many important defence deals are likely to be discussed between the two sides.
The proposal to modify the Su-30 MKI aircraft to be integrated with RVV BD missiles is expected to be taken up for clearance at the meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council scheduled to be held today, defence sources told ANI.
The Russian side has many versions of the RVV BD missiles that can hit targets like Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft and other spy planes in the air at hypersonic speeds of around 6 Mach.
India is also working on two separate projects for modernising the fleet, after which they would be at an advanced level and would be able to see and strike at longer distances than before.
HAL is also likely to get a significant order for the ALH Mark 3 choppers.
The overhaul is supposed to go through the revenue route. why is the DAC approving it?

I was listening to Aberjit ishyra Indian defence analyst he was scathing about the Flankers we have
Saying the Israeli avionics and jammers are jamming the radars and equipment of Russian or Indian origin they can't talk to each other
It has massive radar cross section
It was useless during balakot pak.air Air strikes as no bvr capability
The worry it was said to be a big mistake as a purchase and that's why India will.never buy the su57 or any russian fighter again
Claiming they are obselete with inferior design and doctrine for current air war fare

You can't deny the sheer versatility of Su-30MKIs, they absorb new weapons and upgrades.
"Can't talk to each other" is just poor integration.
AMCA is a stunted design, it will be the worst fifth generation aircraft in terms of what it can do. It can't internally carry ultra long range BVR that are becoming the standard opening volley. We are yet to see finer details that makes a stealth aircraft stealth. That IRST hood already makes me puke, sitting their nice and glinty in RF spectrum. I even doubt it can carry Astra Mk3 considering even Astra is a snug fit. They have fallen into the same trap they did with Tejas - small size.
Su-57 may have a compromised stealth but it more than makes it with its long and deep weapons bay that can carry R-37. If India can get Russia to integrate AMCA avionics in Su-57, we should lap it up
