Akash Series Surface to Air Missile System

EOTS the LWIR MWIR version spec I can not remember if posted before, the automatic target acquisition & tracking is implemented for that range also validated in the firing trial several times now.

This is also one reason why the DG ECS said Akash NG QRSAM can cover and protect with a 30 40 50 km range bubble. Detection is always done at a higher range but that is followed by OODA to get IFF confirmation and decision to engage, only when its decided to engage then the matter of precise target acquired at good distance is useful. So we go with multi mode target tracking radars and EOTS both and each can guide the interceptor Akash to the target. Compared to old radar guidance this dual mode / multi mode method is top notch.

Even more, since there is intercomm between the firing unit and MLS, with coordinated placement of AD zones the covered area will be way bigger than individual bubble of 30-50km. Just set 4 nodes with multiple firing units each offering such a bubble with a 5 km gap between each node in a circular fashion and you see the AD coverage it offers. AD systems either work in grouped together to create point defence zone or in autonomous mode as separate nodes connected together over vast area. 80km detection and 50km neutralisation zone on its own is massive.

The Actual range is never released in media ... You can take the real range around 70 to 80 km for Akash NG.
Actual range is what they say. There is no incentive to make up the range number.

Only an amateur would evaluate a SAM solely based on its range. One should consider a combination of factors including operational altitude, quality of seeker, speed, operational foot print, warhead weight etc.

We can always iterate to improve performance on all these parameters based on the perspective of user requirements. For example, you can double the range by adding a booster like in the case of Barak 8ER.
