The Ministry of Defence, on December 15, 2023, signed a landmark contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Pune for procurement of Electronic Fuzes for the Indian Army for a period of 10 years, at a total cost of Rs 5,336.25 crore. As part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, this contract has been signed for ammunition procurement under ‘Manufacture of Ammunition for Indian Army by Indian Industry’, a Government initiative for long term requirement of 10 years. The aim of the project is to build up ammunition stocks to minimise imports, achieve self-sufficiency in ammunition manufacturing, obtain critical technologies and secure stock affected by supply chain disruption.

Electronic Fuzes are an integral component of medium to heavy calibre Artillery guns which provides sustained artillery firepower for military operations. The Fuzes will be procured for usage in artillery guns which are capable of lethal engagements in various kinds of terrain including high altitude areas along the Northern Borders.

Electronic Fuzes will be manufactured by the BEL at its Pune and upcoming Nagpur Plant. The project will generate employment for one and half lakh man days and encourage active participation of Indian Industries including MSMEs in ammunition manufacturing and broaden ammunition manufacturing ecosystem in the country.

Exact numbers aren't known. Presumed to be in lakhs.
The work this incumbent gov is doing in developing our MIC is simply commendable(if not downright astounding). I guess Russia-Ukraine war has been a great eye-opener for both our gov & armed forces.

Adani Group to double ammunition production capacity amid strong global demand

Adani Group is expanding its ammunition production capacity to meet global demand, doubling small arms output to 300 million rounds annually and beginning production of 155 mm artillery shells.

Fueled by strong global demand, Adani Group's big investment in ammunition is yielding results. The company has secured multi-year export orders and is now gearing up to significantly expand production capacity.

The company, currently producing 150 m rounds of small arms ammunition annually, plans to double capacity to 300 m rounds by year-end. It has already secured advance export bookings for the next two years.

Larger export bookings have been secured for 155 mm artillery shells that the company will commence producing this year. The large caliber plant is currently being set up and will initially produce 150,000 rounds of 155 mm ammunition per year. Ashish Rajvanshi, Chief Executive Officer of Adani Defence & Aerospace told ET that export bookings have already been secured for the next five years, with more inquiries coming in regularly.

Given the Russia-Ukraine conflict and instability in several other regions, there has been a strong demand for artillery shells, with most countries running low on reserves and desperately placing orders to secure supplies at the earliest.

While the Adani group has secured export bookings for the next five years for this ammunition, it is reserving 33 percent of its production capacity in anticipation of requirements arising from within the country.

RFI for MANUFACTURE OF 125 MM ARMOUR PIERCING FIN STABILISEDDISCARDING SABOT (APFSDS) BY INDIAN INDUSTRY

Looks like the IA doesn't know how to formulate RFIs. It says 530-560 mm at 60 deg using the same gun, and that's practically impossible. It would be easier to make the tank float on water. It should be 0 deg.

Looks like we are preparing to make ammo for the West while we also stock up in preparation for long wars.

Always good when a country becomes more self-reliant, especially for something as important as defense. 88% is pretty impressive.

New Partnership with DIEHL for Manufacturing of "System Vulcano 155mm Precision Guided Munitions" under Make in India Initiative at a Greenfield Facility in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra

Reliance Defence bags Rs 600 crore export order from Germany’s Rheinmetall

New Delhi: Reliance Defence Limited (Reliance Defence), promoted by Reliance Infrastructure Limited, announced Wednesday it has secured an export order worth Rs 600 crore from Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH, a leading German defence and ammunition manufacturer.

Reliance Defence’s export order is one of the largest in the high-tech ammunition domain to date in the Indian private sector.

This is part of the recently announced strategic partnership with Rheinmetall that aims to manufacture explosives and propellants for medium and large calibre ammunition for international customers.
A statement released by Reliance Defence quoted Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG as saying, “This strategic partnership of Rheinmetall with Reliance Defence led by Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group illustrates our strong commitment to partner with India under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Modi”.

Anil D. Ambani, Founder Chairman, Reliance Group said, “The strategic partnership with Rheinmetall brings cutting-edge capabilities to India and represents a defining milestone for the country’s private defence manufacturing sector”.

Reliance Defence will establish an integrated facility for the manufacturing of explosives, ammunition, and small arms under the ambitious Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City (DADC) initiative.

The DADC is being developed in the Watad industrial area of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, and is set to become the largest greenfield project in the defence sector ever undertaken by any private company in India.

Incidentally, in 2012, the German company was blacklisted by the Indian defence ministry over allegations of corruption. The ban was extended for three more years this year, which means the Indian defence forces cannot sign a deal with the company.

Incidentally, state-run Munitions India Limited had sold close to 500 tonnes of explosives to the Germany company in 2023 and early 2024.

Private defence suppliers seek review of rules limiting ammunition procurement to public sector

A private defence manufacturer says if the MoD amends the existing rule to allow for open Request For Proposal to be issued to both public and private sector, it will provide a big boost to the private ammunition industry

Private defence suppliers have requested the Defence Ministry (MoD) to review defence procurement manual (DPM) which restricts supply of ammunition only from public sector manufacturers, saying that they are capable of fulfilling the munitions requirement of the defence forces.

A private defence manufacturer said that if the MoD amended the existing rule to allow for open Request For Proposal (RFP) to be issued to both public and private sector, it would provide a big boost to the ammunition industry and allow private sector players, who had invested hugely to join the Make In India initiative, to supply ammunition to India’s Armed Forces.

“We had a meeting where we have given presentation over the concern and the MoD assured that the proposal is under review by the MoD and Department of Military Affairs,” said a top official of a private defence manufacturer.

Adani Defence and Aerospace ammunition manufacturing facility in Kanpur, under Uttar Pradesh defence corridor, is already rolling out 150 million rounds of small calibre ammunition of — 5.56 mm (used majorly in Insas rifles), 7.62 mm (7.62x39 mm cartridge which is used in AK-47 and AK-203 rifles and 7.62x51 mm NATO round which is used in self-loading rifles (SLR) and machine guns), .338 mm (sniper rifles) and 9 mm (pistols).

“Adani already has capacity to produce 300 million rounds of small calibre ammunition and can fulfil all the requirement of defence forces with world-class quality and highly competitive costs. Having done full indigenisation, Adani Defence is also setting up the Propellant (explosive material) capacity which is otherwise imported into the country and it will reduce dependence on Europe and the U.S. It will ensure that India becomes completely self-reliant in ammunition and can overcome any global supply chain disruptions,” said Ashish Rajvanshi, CEO, Adani Defence & Aerospace, in a virtual interaction with journalists, who had been invited by the company, at its Kanpur ammunition complex.

He emphasised that the ammunition produced by Adani Defence & Aerospace is of the highest quality and NATO-certified, which allows them to export it to global markets, based on the approved list of countries by the External Affairs Ministry (MEA) and the MoD. The company is already exporting ammunition to four countries.

At the State police level, the company recently supplied ammunition to the U.P. Police, through bidding which was done on the Government e-Marketplace (GEM) portal, he said.

Recently, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had announced that the Ministry had declared 2025 as the ‘Year of Reforms’, aiming to transform the Armed Forces to become technologically advanced and combat-ready. He had also quoted that defence exports had surged from ₹686 crore in 2013–14 to ₹23,622 crore in 2024–25.
