Maharashtra itself is downplaying everything from tests undertaken to the rate of infections to deaths. I've multiple sources confirm that on detection of an infection case, the patient is asked to homequarantine or if serious taken to a hospital. Family members aren't tested. If testing is insisted upon by family members or neighbours, the municipal personnel simply ask them to get tested at pvt centres as govt labs would report the result only after a week.
Since each of these tests cost INR 4500 & above, most ppl can't afford it & back off. Then there are cases where family members refuse to test. Further, self quarantine is enforced by the society office bearers in apartment blocks. Non compliance is to be reported to the municipality who don't respond in time.
Then comes the issue of hospitals, most of which are straining at the load. Both deaths & rates of infection are grossly underreported. The quality of treatment is best not discussed in municipal hospitals. There's also the issue of other serious ailments left untreated due to this scare of the Chinese virus which also adds to the casualty list as also cases who've been admitted to non Chinese virus hospitals for treatment of other illness but end up contracting the virus & at times dying from it.
There's also no attempt made to trace the contacts of an infected person . Arguably this has been the case since mid April. Mumbai is on the precipice.
