Faster freight service on Indian Railways! Goods trains run at 90 kmph on newly launched Eastern DFC stretch​

Dedicated Freight Corridor: In a landmark of sorts, Piyush Goyal-led Indian Railways has recently operated freight trains at a speed of 90 km per hour in the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridorā€™s newly inaugurated New Khurja-New Bhaupur section. This 351-km Eastern DFC section was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently. According to officials quoted in a PTI report, the freight trains were even faster than the Rajdhani Express trains which run on this Indian Railways stretch at an average speed of 80 km per hour. At present, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) is carrying out the construction of 3,342-km long Eastern DFC and Western DFC for exclusive movement of freight trains.

According to DFCCIL, in a game-changing development, on the newly inaugurated New Khurja-New Bhaupur section of the Eastern DFC, freight trains have started to attain top speeds of above 90 km per hour. Higher freight train speeds would result in faster delivery of goods as well as faster turnaround reducing freight costs, the corporation stated. Till 3 January 2021, a total of 53 trains were operated. Of these trains, 32 trains ran between New Khurja and New Bhaupur (down direction) at the highest total speed of 83.70 km per hour. While in the up direction, between New Bhaupur and New Khurja, as many as 21 trains were operated at a maximum speed of 85.98 km per hour.

An official was quoted in the report saying that it is a small stretch. However, as this is one of the most congested stretches of Indian Railways, the freight trains will run at a faster speed than the Rajdhani Express trains. DFCCIL, in the first phase of the DFC project, is constructing the 1,504 route km of the Western DFC and 1,856 route km of the Eastern DFC. The Eastern DFC will start from Sahnewal and before terminating at Dankuni, WB, it will pass through the states of Haryana, Bihar, UP, Jharkhand. On the other hand, the Western DFC connecting Dadri in UP to JNPT in Mumbai will pass through the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Haryana.

Those aren't 2 separate locos, they together act as one unit. They both COMBINED produce 12,000 HP.
Here's another:
WAG-12B in the front and WAG-9HH in the middle. Infact WAG-9HH is more impressive as it alone produces 9,000 HP as compared to WAG-12B but horsepower is not the most important factor to compare either. Efficiency of power conversion, torqe, acceleraion times, serviceability, etc are important too.

If the capital expenditure utilisation between 2006 and 2014 was Rs 4,000 crore, since 2014, it has been Rs 45,000 crore. Money is being pumped into this project at a greater scale,ā€ he said.

The two permanently coupled units are 6000hp each having 12000hp together. They are permanently coupled units therefore they are to be treated as one unit not two locomotives.
Those aren't 2 separate locos, they together act as one unit. They both COMBINED produce 12,000 HP.
Here's another:
WAG-12B in the front and WAG-9HH in the middle. Infact WAG-9HH is more impressive as it alone produces 9,000 HP as compared to WAG-12B but horsepower is not the most important factor to compare either. Efficiency of power conversion, torqe, acceleraion times, serviceability, etc are important too.
WAG9HH received clearances just a few weeks back. Full scale production should start now.

Indian Railways DFC project needs daily monitoring to ensure completion by June 2022, says Piyush Goyal​

Recently, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal reviewed the progress of various sections of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Project on both Eastern and Western DFC corridors. Indian Railways officials gave inputs about the project progress being made in all the DFC sections as well as some of the challenges being faced by the national transporter in getting work completed in certain sections. Goyal said to ensure that the completed project is handed over to the nation by June 2022, the DFC project needs to be monitored on a daily basis. As the DFC project completion gathers momentum, development of freight terminals along the corridor should also be given emphasis to boost business operations for all stake holders, he said.

The national transporter is developing dedicated freight corridors in a bid to provide exclusive movement on fast speeds for freight trains. In the first phase of the DFC project, the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) is constructing the Western DFC (1504 Rkm) as well as Eastern DFC (1856 Rkm including PPP Sonnagar-Dankuni section).

According to the Railway Ministry, the Eastern DFC will start from Sahnewal near Ludhiana and terminate at Dankuni in West Bengal. The corridor will pass through the states of Punjab, UP, Haryana, Bihar and Jharkhand. While the Western DFC will link Dadri in UP to Jawaharlal Nehru Port in the financial capital, Mumbai. It will traverse through the states of UP, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat and Maharashtra of Western DFC and Eastern DFC (excluding the PPP Sonnagar-Dankuni section) i.e. by June 2022, 2800 Rkm will be commissioned.

According to the Railway Ministry, the DFC project is being seen as a game-changer in Indiaā€™s economic development. Recently, two DFC sections on Eastern and Western Corridors were dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. These DFC sections are Rewari ā€“ Madar section on the Western corridor and New Khurja ā€“ New Bhaupur section on the Eastern corridor.

By March this year, Indian Railways will add 350 kilometre to 400 kilometre of Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal said. Goyalā€™s announcement has come after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had recently inaugurated 306-kilometre long Rewari-Madar section of the Western DFC and 351 kilometre long New Bhaupur-New Khurja section of Eastern DFC.

Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL), a PSU under the Ministry of Railways is constructing the 1504 kilometre long Western DFC and 1856 kilometre long Eastern DFC.

ā€œIn India, we 200 billion dollar logistics ecosystem, a good part of that is supported by Indian Railways where we are making massive efforts to bring down the cost of logistics to expand the scope of service that Indian Railways provides. By March, we will have 350-400 km of DFCs ready,ā€ Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said.

The Eastern DFC starting from Sahnewal near Ludhiana (Punjab) will pass through the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand to terminate at Dankuni in West Bengal. The Western DFC starts from Dadri in Uttar Pradesh to Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in Mumbai will traverse through the states of UP, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra of WDFC. The 2800 kilometre route is likely to be commissioned by June 2022, the Ministry of Railways stated.

Freight Train Hits New Speed Record On DFC Section​

Paving the way for running goods train at an increased speed, Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) has run a freight service with 50 wagons at a maximum speed of 100 kilometres per hour on the newly-built New Palanpur-Madar section of Western Corridor.

The goods train carrying 3,900 tonnes of high speed diesel was scheduled from Rajkot in Gujarat to Bawal in Haryana.

The commissioning of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) up to the Gujarat ports of Mundra and Pipavav in FY22F should lead to time-guaranteed delivery of consignments by the railways, leading to 9pp market share shift from road to rail over FY22-26F.​

The fact that WDFC freight rates will be lower than existing rail rates by 16-20% by FY26F will boost Indian logisticsā€™ competitiveness, both from a cost and timeliness perspective.
