not likely .IATA reported 430000 GPS jamming and spoofing incident in 2024. 62% increase over 2023. Looks like Indian forces are after something .
I mean GPS signal interference is very common now a days with increasing conflict last few years and hence IATA has reported more such incident world over.
Now specific to recent Spoofing incident around major Indian cities. I feel tri-services are testing out some EW configuration around major cities which is causing issues and this is something they will not come out clean in public domain. Through DGCA a mandate passed that if commercial aircraft face any disruption report in 10 minute and a general area specific notice published out. Why Kolkata ? "We will start from east next time" ISPR statement in media.

Now, how it is being done? Simplest form will be spoofing. have a rogue satellite or drone spoof the GPS messages. Use existing message to synchronize your own internal atomic / high precision clock and generate spoofed messages with timestamps a bit different. So time of flight changes for the packet and reciever gets confused as where it is on earth.
Remember, you have to recieve messages from minimum 3 GPS satellites to conclude where you are. If one or two of them are drones or non-GPS satellites masquarading as a GPS satellite. You are cooked.
Now Mil-spec messages have cryptography to defend against it, but it is not foolproof. And if US is involved then crypto goes out of question. Because US has all the crypto keys to GPS.
