General News, Questions And Discussions - Indian Navy

The contract for Varunastra was signed with Bharat Dynamics Limited, Hyderabad worth Rs 1,543 crore. Varunastra is an indigenous ship-launched anti-submarine torpedo developed by the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory. Equipped with advanced maneuvering capabilities, it is capable of engaging enemy submarines at long ranges, thereby enhancing the anti-submarine warfare capability of the Indian Navy.

I am not able to figure out the total 78. Either AoN has been given for 02 Next Generation Multi-Purpose Vessels or something else. I am having the following numbers:

#Under Construction: (42)

1. Samarthak class MPV = 01
2. Sachi class OPV = 11
3. Next Generation Missile Vessel = 06
4. Nilgiri class FFG = 01
5. Talwar class FFG = 02
6. Mahe class ASWSWC = 05
7. Arnala class ASWSWC = 04
8. Krishna class CTS = 03
9. Fleet Support Ship = 05
10. Diving Support Craft = 04

#Future Projects:

• Cost Negotiation stage: (19)
1. Project 75I class SSK = 06
2. Next Generation Corvette = 08
3. Next Generation Survey Vessels = 05

• RFP: (13)

1. Next Generation MPV = 02
2. LHD = 04
3. P-17B class FFG = 07

• AoN: (43)
1. New Water Jet Fast Attack Craft = 31
2. Mine Counter Measure Vessels = 12
3. Fast Interceptor Craft-I = 120

Total: 75

• RFI: (13)
1. High Speed Landing Crafts = 06
2. National Hospital Ship = 01
3. LCU MK - V = 06

There might be a possibility that they are also including 3 additional Scorpene class SSK.

No mention of UVLS.

Yeah. But it is being developed. Last time I say doc regarding UVLS they were going with a twin configuration. A smaller UVL cell for hot launching smaller missiles like SAMs & a larger cold launched UVL cell for bigger missiles like Brahmos, ET-LDHCM, LR-AShMs etc.

The problem with this approach is that some larger missiles like Kusha M2, M3, AD-1, AD-2 etc. need to be hot launched. SAMs of any range should preferably use hot launch, that allows them to preserve momentum & climb faster.

So, we will need not 2 but 3 types ULV cells. Smaller hot-launch, large hot-launch & large cold-launch. DRDO is trying to see if they can quad-pack smaller SAMs from the large hot launch VLS.

Again, the problem here is that Navy's current hot launch SAM, Barak-8, is a bit smaller than the Kusha M1. There are compatibility issues which will need to be resolved. Unless the Navy wants to abandon the Barak-8 entirely, I don't think they do.

Boss any source on this? Or its your personal info? I have been down VLSRSAM rabbit hole for a while the fact that they are considering a larger hot launched VLS with quad packing is music to my ears or eyes in this case.

There was a EoI for quad packed hot launch canisters sometime back. Sheet metal made with the missiles mounted on rails, similar to VL-SRSAM's & Akash-NG's cannisters. The exhaust vents seem to be a common rail type. Website timed out before I could download it, I hate govt. websites. It has been made private now. Alpha Defence said that work on ULVMS in ongoing recently on twitter as a reply to somebody. So, I am not the only one who saw it.

Do check out the VL-SRSAM's cannister EoI on Strategicfront's twitter page if you haven't already seen it.

It's not confirmed yet. They may choose to go ahead with the P-18 with multiple VLMs instead of ULVS if work on the ULVS gets delayed.
