India-EU Relations.

What is this now? From not signing security partnerships with anybody, to signing back-to-back deals with UAE & now EU, a core part of Indian foreign policy seems to be changing. Will need to see the fine print of this agreement:

Care to explain, please?
Apparently, Turkey has to impose the same tariff on India (or any other country) as the EU imposes. But Turkey got no seat in the negotiation table. The other EU nations could voice their concerns & seek concessions elsewhere from India. From their POV they are giving us concessions without getting any in return.

This is what I understood. I could be wrong.

India, EU Agree on Mother of all Agreements

After over 18 years of protracted negotiations, India and the European Union agreed on a free trade agreement (FTA), dubbed “the mother of all agreements”, which will be mutually beneficial and give both New Delhi and Brussels a reason to cheer in a world that is getting increasingly unpredictable.

An official announcement about the deal is expected to be made during the 16th India-EU summit on Tuesday between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

“Negotiations have been successfully concluded. The deal has been finalised,” commerce secretary Rajesh Agrawal said on Monday.

The deal is expected to be signed this year and may come into effect early next year after securing ratification from the EU Parliament. In India, it requires only the nod of the Union Cabinet.

NEW DELHI — The EU and India have concluded trade talks on a free trade agreement, a senior Indian official told POLITICO.

“Official-level negotiations are being concluded and both sides are all set to announce the successful conclusion of FTA talks on 27th January,” Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal told POLITICO.

Under the deal, India is expected to significantly reduce tariffs on cars and machinery as well agricultural goods such as wine and hard alcohol.

“This would be a very good story for our agriculture sector. I believe we are aiming to start a completely new chapter in the field of cooperation in the automotive sector, in machinery,” EU trade chief Maroš Šefčovič told POLITICO.

On trade in services, the trade chief said that sectors like telecoms, maritime and financial services were expected to benefit.

“This is again something where also India is making groundbreaking steps to new levels of cooperation, because we are the first one with whom they’re ready to consider this cooperation,” he said.

The conclusion to the talks arrived as the EU leadership was on a three-day visit to India for a summit to boost trade and defense ties between New Delhi and Brussels.

With the talks between the two sides having been on and off since 2007, the pact comes at an ideal moment as New Delhi and Brussels battle steep tariffs from the U.S. and cheap goods from China.

India and the European Union on Monday closed a “landmark” free trade agreement, touted as the ‘mother of all deals,’ Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during a speech at the India Energy Week on Tuesday.

The FTA signed with the EU, which represents about 25% of global GDP and about a third of global trade, will also complement India’s deals with Britain and the European Free Trade Association, Modi said.

The agreement will forge a market of 2 billion people at a time when trade ties are being tested amid rising geopolitical tensions.

“I congratulate our colleagues associated with every sector, such as textiles, gems and Jewelry, leather and shoes. This deal will prove to be very supportive to these sectors,” Modi said in a speech in Hindi, translated by CNBC.

Will have to wait for the deal to be tabled in EU for ratification to know about more details regarding this.
They usually provide more insight into a FTA than GOI does. Especially in cases of non-tarrif related sections including investments, ease of regulations etc.

Hopefully this will be more than just elimination of tarrifs/duties on indian products.

The trade deal from the perspective of the EU:

  • Tariffs on 96.6% of EU goods exports will be eliminated or reduced.
  • Saving up to €4 billion per year in duties on European products.
  • Competitive advantage for EU exporters, with biggest trade opening India has given to any trade partner.
  • Privileged access to Indian services market in key sectors e.g. financial services and maritime transport.
  • Simplification of customs procedures to make exports quicker and easier.
  • Protection of EU intellectual property such as trademarks.
  • A dedicated chapter for small EU businesses.
