Pak blinks, offers ‘moratorium’ on artillery firing to ease LoC tensions

Islamabad has blinked first in the staring battle along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border between India and Pakistan. Under sustained pressure from India, Pakistan has offered to de-escalate tensions along the LoC . The offer to India was made by the Pakistani military “through the institutionalised military channels of communication between the two sides,” a senior official in the Indian security establishment said on condition of anonymity.

The Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of the two countries are regularly in touch and HT learns that the offer may have come during such an interaction.

Pakistan has offered to remove its Special Service Group (SSG) – the special forces of Pakistan – from the LoC and even suggested a “moratorium on the artillery fire from both sides,” a report sent to the Prime Minister’s Office said. HT has seen a copy of the report.

After the Pulwama suicide car bomb attack by a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist on February 26, which left 40 troopers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) dead and led to the subsequent air strikes by the Indian Air Force on Jaish’s training camp at Balakot in Pakistan, Islamabad moved special forces and troops along the LoC and the border and “maintained a precautionary deployment”.

India’s pressure on Pakistan was not just along the border, but diplomatic as well. With the US, UK, and France backing India, China agreed to remove its so-called “technical hold” on declaring Maulana Masood Azhar, the emir of JeM, a global terrorist by the United Nations Security Council. Simultaneously, India is also pushing the Financial Action Taskforce (FATF), a global body that watches money laundering and terror funding, to blacklist Pakistan.

In the report, the Indian Army has said that there have been “no infiltration attempts,” and “no attempt to (carry out) cross border tactical action since the Pulwama terror attack.” Interestingly, terror launch pads along the LoC, from which terrorists infiltrate India are empty. “Terror infrastructure in close vicinity of the LoC has been temporarily closed due to overall pressure being maintained on Pakistan,” the Indian Army added in the report.

The thinning out of terror launch pads were reported “from active areas like Poonch and Rajouri as well,” a senior defence ministry official said, asking not to be identified because he is not authorized to speak to the media. “These are clear on-ground signals from Pakistan for de-escalation.” Recently, when formations along the LoC also repaired bunkers --an annual feature to prepare for the monsoons-- the “Pakistan army didn’t interfere,” the official added.

The government had warned the Indian Army and especially the Corps Commanders to take “adequate precautions” to prevent cross-border raids by the Pakistani army after the Pulwama suicide attack. And, while the Indian Air Force was planning air strikes, the Indian Army reinforced its positions along the border and adopted an aggressive posture all along the LoC and the international border. “There were over 100 instances when artillery was used,” the official said and added that “the use of artillery has considerably reduced now.” Pakistan army positions along the border from where Border Action Teams could be launched into India were especially targeted. “In the initial days, several Pakistan Army positions were destroyed, and we have not allowed them to rebuild or these positions,” a second senior official in the ministry of defence said on condition of anonymity.
Beggars finding it too costly to keep the deployment, want breathing room so that they don't break the economy completely and face wrath of Pakistani public.

Will be back to old ways the moment they think they are out of woods. US-Taliban talks broke down and so did IMF talks, things went south with Taliban attacking Counterpart International, now Pakistan has to appease US to get IMF lenient. Hope some ISI clown miscalculate again and IMF deal is off the table. That will be meltdown and mob lynching of Pakistani Army on street.

Terror as instrument used by Army has led to increasing poverty and common man finding it hard to arrange 2 meals a day. How long will they survive when army made famine start killing in hundreds.

The only reason they want a moratorium is because they are being hit hard. Should the situation be reversed they wouldn't want the same. If we agree to a moratorium they will get the time to gather resources to fight again. Remember the "Ramzan ceasefire" in Kashmir ? Same story here.

Like @vstol Jockey once posted we agreed to withdraw those big soviet artillery guns(I forget the name) from border as a confidence building measure, which they used to set up border infra for BAT attacks. Don't back down now, keep the pressure up.

Just 2 months of LoC action resulting in “no infiltration attempts,” , “no attempt to (carry out) cross border tactical action" , "terror launch pads becoming empty" and these guys want to launch Ghazwa-e-hind to occupy whole of india :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

India studying water treaty, water will flow to Rajasthan, Punjab not Pakistan: Nitin Gadkari

Nitin Gadkari has once again said that India will stop river water flowing into Pakistan and divert it to Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana instead.

  • Union minister Nitin Gadkari said India is studying the Indus Water Treaty
  • Gadkari said India is not bound to follow the Indus treaty
  • The minister blamed Pakistan for not holding up the spirit of the treaty
Union minister Nitin Gadkari has once again raked up the Indus Water Treaty issue and said that India is studying the water sharing agreement and will be re-channelling the water to Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan instead of giving it to Pakistan.

Minister for Water Resources, Nitin Gadkari said, "Water is going to Pakistan from 3 rivers, we don't want to stop that. But the basis of water treaty between India and Pakistan were peaceful relations and friendship which have completely vanished. So we are not bound to follow this treaty."

Gadkari added, "Pakistan is continuously supporting terrorists. If Pakistan doesn't stops terrorism, we won't have any other option but to stop river water to Pakistan. So India has started internally studying it. The water will go to Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan."

In the days after the February 14 Pulwama terror attack, Gadkari had threatened that India will stop sharing water with Pakistan.

Earlier in February, slamming Pakistan over cross-border terrorism, Gadkari had asked what is the point of continuing the Indus Water Treaty if its spirit of mutual love, harmony and cordial relations is not being honoured by the neighbouring country.

He had said that India has decided to stop the flow of river water to Pakistan under the treaty.

Under the Indus Water Treaty signed between India and Pakistan in 1960, all waters of the three easters rivers, Ravi, Sutlej and Beas, averaging around 33 million acre feet (MAF), would go to India for exclusive use.

The waters of western rivers -- Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab -- averaging to around 135 MAF were allocated to Pakistan except for specified domestic, non-consumptive and agricultural use permitted to India as provided in the treaty.

India studying water treaty, water will flow to Rajasthan, Punjab not Pakistan: Nitin Gadkari

Is anything concrete about to happen or is it just election season rabble rousing ? He has been making similar statements for a while, since the suicide attack on CRPF convoy.

Explained: India to stop share of water flowing to Pakistan

Why continue Indus Water Treaty if Pakistan doesn't honour its spirit, says Nitin Gadkari

Since the WB is involved in the treaty, withdrawing from it will be a long drawn process.

Also, water wars is part of Pakistani nuke threshold, so that has to be taken into consideration.

This has to go on for years, not just a few months.

More like, it should be the permanent state of affairs now, as long as Pakistan completely dismantles its terror infrastructure from the ground up.

To begin with, the article is misleading. In the immediate aftermath of Pulwama too, newspapers carried Gadakri's quotes with similarly misleading headlines. He's talking only about the waters of the Eastern rivers, which by IWT, we are totally entitled too. As of now those waters are also flowing into Pakistan. Notice there's no mention of the waters of the Western rivers except for an anodyne statement stating that they will be re examining the IWT. Ironically, the biggest opponent of the IWT is the state of J&K. Do you hear the jokers from the PDP, NC or the Hurriyat there ever talk in loud voices over a period of time of the IWT?

US-Pak Taliban talks flunk & USA get intel on their movement/location lol now that's a successful talks when u can track them back to their houses

True. But wasn't retaliatory conventional attack in Pakistan after a terrorist attack in India, a nuclear redline too ?
As time goes on we will discover that more and more of their red lines aren't as absolute as they are made out to be.

And about the WB, what if we don't withdraw ? what if we violate terms/re-write them as it suits us with out a full withdrawal ?
Besides we don't have the infra we need to fully use our share yet, it will still take us about 5 years at a minimum to reach full utilization of our share. Maybe then we can bite into their share.

Ummah-chummah doesn't hold water when their own interest are on the line.

We can withdraw in a jiffy If we chose to. The treaty is based on the goodwill of India and we have every reason to withdraw this goodwill. WB gave money to Pakistan to create a network of canals to meet its agri needs. And for that it negotiated this IWT between India and Pakistan. India was opposed to it but Nehru gave a go ahead and signed this one sided treaty with Pakistan when he was invited by Ayub Khan to Karachi and allowed to do a kind of road show in Karachi. Nehru melted and signed this treaty. Turn any stone and you will find Nehru under it. His stupidities are unending. We have a saying in Haryana, "Chutiya mar gaye, aulaad chodh gaye.

This man along with Piyush Goyal. These men actually make 100% of what they say reality.
I actually hope we had another one like these 2 to handle Defence ministry.

Intangible effects of the Stand off .... Pressure on mullas are off and both PA and ISI is busy tracking India....... You can see the attacks increasing..... This is going to continue for some time.... Not easy to bring it back to pre pulwama state.....It all depends how the stand off is moving....

They can blame India for this terrorist attacks.... Though indirectly.... We did cause the damage

The stand off is not only about few rats killed in balakot or the dog fight..... Much more than that

India should never let the pressure down on Pakistan till it gets completely destroyed. NEVER. Remember "Daya bin Sant kasai, Daya kari toh Aafat aaiyi"

Prithviraj Chouhan did the same mistake by pardoning Ghori 17 times. And we saw the outcome. India has pardoned Pakistan countless times since 1947. That is why India has bled and tormented for so long - psychologically, physically, emotionally, because of the Nehru-Gandhi Jaichand scums who primarily drove the Western-Anglo-Islamic agenda with the honey-traps of Edwina and Antonio Maino. After a long struggle we now have a duo of Modi-Doval - the like of Chandragupta Maurya-Chanakya duo, to convert this land back into Akhand Bharat by eliminating the invisible and visible enemies from within and outside.

Pakistan would have never have survived but for the betrayal of India by the Nehru-Gandhi family.
