Indian Army : Updates & Discussions

This is big, whichever way you see it. We're seeing an indigenous autonomous land system being deployed in a bilateral exercise before any formal orders being placed, maybe for the first time? Guess this validates a lot of things for the IA. Hopefully orders follow... The capabilities that such systems can provide to an IA fire-team, in different configurations, are beyond incredible - Recon, Medevac, Load-bearing, weaponized, etc...

Modi govt & armed forces should cut personnel by another 10%, not recruit to fill 'deficit'

Frankly I don't know how did this guy get to be general. Look at his views at a time like this.
Indian Coast Guard budget is still very limited. Once we get more serious about patrolling of waters of Mauritius, Seychelles and Maldives with them, ICG will grow further in numbers. The lack of dedicated training ship and fiasco of its training facility land acquisition are hurting it.

Same for Navy, it's set to grow numerically. It's airwing is set to grow and this decade will see a spurt in induction of smaller warships. NGMVs, NGCs, SW-ASW, NG-FACs , etc. So the numbers will grow here too.

The Airforce numbers will remain constant as slowly the Army Aviation grows bigger and helicopter acquisition will be pioneered by it, not by IAF.

Coming to Army, there should be a slight decrease in numbers personally speaking.

Frankly no Coast Guard travels thousands of kms for patrol duties. It's limited to the littorals of the home country , hence the name Coast Guard . Patrolling waters off the coasts of Mauritius , Seychelles etc is not our responsibility & if it's deemed so , it should be handled by the IN .

Logically all our coastal waters upto 3 kms should be the preserve of the Marine Police in those respective states followed by littoral waters up until the first 100-200 kms depending on the threat perception & assessment by the ICG , followed by the IN in waters beyond that .

The proposal for a marine police was made by a committee tasked to investigate the security loopholes that facilitated the 26/11 terrorist attacks & suggest remedies. Like most things in Mera Bharat Mahaan , it remains WiP that too in 50% of the case . In the remaining 50% we haven't even begun.

The ICG has been considerably strengthened leaving the IN free to move into deeper waters & choke points conduct joint exercises with foreign navies building up a rapport with them , map the oceans etc . This too has taken some 13+ yrs .

As regards the Marine Police which comes under the jurisdiction of the state government , the less said the better.

The IA is akso tasked with CI operations in the NE & J&K apart from active deployments on the LoC , Siachen & since 2 yrs on the LAC which should now be considered a regular feature even if de escalation happens there in some time .

Where's the question of decreasing the strength of the IA. If anything we need to further bolster our numbers of the existing MSC & raise a new one .

Coming to Army.

The British Army is 80k strong but has nearly 2000 IFVs/APCs in service. Means almost all their infantry is either mechanised or motorised. I am only counting wheeled or tracked APCs/IFVs. Not MRAPs in that.

US army has some 9 lakh active troops including their National Guard units and excluding the Reserves. They hold nearly 20,000 APCs/IFVs. Discounting all Humvees and MRAPs. Means almost all of their deployed or ready troops have an Armoured vehicle to travel into. Every single one of them.

Now may will claim they are first world developed nations.

So come closer to our Border. China has 15,000 + (excluding it's Reserves) APCs/IFVs for it's nearly 10 lakh Army. Excluding humvee copies and MRAP copies.

Now in home, India has 2500 BMP2 for its 12 lakh strong Army. We are 50 years behind in contemporary warfare.

Even the 6 lakh strong Pakistan Army is almost 70% motorized/mechanised. They have 3500+ APCs/IFVs.

We are learning from our mistakes in Srilanka. And Govt really wants to keep China away from Mauritius and Seychelles. These two island chains are more important to India than people actually talk. And Naval deployments will spark a lot of issues.

While hunting you take it slow and steady. ICG will take it slow and steady there. With ICG we can say fisheries protection, stopping smuggling, search and rescue and EEZ patrolling.... It's positive.

Now instead put a Navy warship there. Everything changes.

We are not looking for a 2-3 weeks a year
joint patrolling. We eventually want a permanent presence there.

There was an AJ documentary recently on Mauritius where in the northern most tip of the country which is basically an island with a local population of 300 , we're constructing an air strip cum base to house the P-8i .

Naval deployments would follow.

We wanted something similar in Seychelles too but locals protested a military base.

A WhAP class vehicle should solve that issue over the long term.

In any case, we don't need heavy vehicles across the board. Like the US Army is divided into Armour (9), Stryker (7) and Infantry BCTs (14), and most of their composition is Infantry. And this BCT is mainly composed of Humvees and trucks.

How do you reply to the Chinese or even Pakistani situation then?
