Air India commande cent appareils de plus à Airbus
Air India orders one hundred more aircraft from Airbus
Air India's mega-order of 250 aircraft from Airbus has just been increased to 350 by the former Indian flag carrier, now owned by the Tata group.
The growth of the air transport market in the world's most populous country is hard to satiate. Air India announced an order for 90 A320neo and ten A350 aircraft from Airbus on 9 December. These one hundred aircraft are in addition to its mega-order of 470 placed in February 2023.

At that time, the airline owned by the Tata group ordered 250 aircraft from Airbus - 210 A320neo family aircraft and 40 A350s - and 220 from Boeing. This brings the total number of aircraft ordered from Airbus by this customer alone in less than two years to 350 - including 300 single-aisle aircraft.

The 2023 order was accompanied by ‘significant options’ to acquire further aircraft from Airbus. It is likely that these have now been confirmed. Deliveries of single-aisle aircraft are scheduled to begin in 2027. Airbus began delivering A350s in 2023, reallocating aircraft originally built for Aeroflot whose delivery had been cancelled following sanctions against Russia after the invasion of Ukraine.

The contract with Boeing also included options for fifty additional 737 MAXs and twenty 787s.

Air India wants to make its mark

For Air India, this new order confirms its ambition to catch up with its major competitors, notably IndiGo on the Indian domestic market, which ordered 500 A320neo aircraft in June 2023 and thirty A350s last May. On international routes, the aim is to compete with the Gulf carriers Emirates and Qatar Airways.

‘These one hundred additional Airbus aircraft will help position Air India for further growth and contribute to our mission of making it a world-class airline that connects India to the four corners of the globe’, said Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company that owns the former national airline.

‘With India's passenger growth outpacing the rest of the world, a significantly improving infrastructure and a young and ambitious population that is becoming increasingly global, we see a clear case for Air India to expand its future fleet beyond the firm orders for 470 aircraft placed last year,’ he added.

‘Having personally witnessed the tremendous growth of the Indian aviation sector in recent months, I am pleased to see Air India renew its confidence in Airbus with this additional order for both our A320 Family and the A350,’ said Guillaume Faury, Airbus CEO.
