The Indian Army Is Set To Procure New Version Of The Swathi Weapon Locating Radar
India’s Defence Acquisition Council is likely to approve the acquisition of six indigenously developed weapon locating radars (WLRs) worth Rs 400 crores for the Indian Army (IA). Delhi Defence Review has learnt that the approval is for a new version of the Swathi WLR which is already in service with the IA. This new version, let’s call it Swathi-2 for the time being, like its predecessor has been developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), which is of course the Defence Research & Development Organization’s (DRDO’s) premier radar laboratory. As such, it would be worthwhile to take a closer look at the emergence of Swathi-2 as well other developments in the arena of indigenous military radar in India.

SWATHI.jpg

The baseline Swathi WLR is a C-Band phased array, developed by LRDE and produced by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). It can automatically track incoming hostile rocket, artillery & mortar rounds. Swathi can also track the trajectory of friendly rounds to locate their point of impact and issue necessary corrections. It is a two-vehicle system, with each vehicle being a 8×8 heavy duty truck manufactured by BEML Ltd on which different elements of the overall system are mounted. The phased array itself is mounted on a swivelling platform to provide wide coverage. Importantly, BEL has completed the production of Swathi WLRs ordered by Armenia, as part of $40 million deal, and the systems are likely to be delivered soon. Many other countries have also apparently evinced interest in the system.

Successor to the Swathi
Now, while the IA has found the Swathi useful along the line of control, it had nevertheless requested LRDE to develop a lighter version of this radar. This was to enable easier operations in mountainous terrain, especially along the line of actual control (LAC). Responding to this request, LRDE has developed a lighter version of the Swathi radar with a fixed radar array that has a 90-degree view. This array is mounted on a BEML-manufactured 6×6 truck for easier manoeuvrability in difficult terrain. It is noteworthy, that despite the smaller footprint, Swathi-2 has better performance than the earlier version and the IA is reportedly very pleased with its performance in mountain trials so far which have also been conducted in winter. Post-trials, the army now intends to buy six units of this new version at a cost of approximately Rs 400 crores and the matter is now with the DAC as mentioned earlier.

India’s Ministry of Defence recently brought out a list of items that will no longer be imported. Included in that list was the “Successor of Flycatcher &Upgraded Super Fledermaus (USFM) / Air Defence Fire Control Radar (ADFCR)”. This inclusion has been made due to the development of an indigenous ADFCR called the Atulya. User trials for this system will be conducted later this year, having been delayed due to the COVID pandemic situation.

The programme for the replacement of outdated Flycatcher radars in service with the Indian military was split into two parts with one consisting of an immediate import of 66 units (possibly from Israel) followed by the acquisition of an Indian system, which is to be the Atulya. ADFCRs will be used to cue upgraded L-70 air defence guns, with 3 of them being slaved to each radar. As such, Atulya has reportedly passed developmental trials with flying colours and it remains to be seen if the planned imports are still on the anvil.

Royal Enfield has literally spread its wings just like its symbol when it inaugurated its first overseas assembly plant in Argentina

A couple of days ago Royal Enfield announced that it will be setting up a new manufacturing facility in Argentina which will assemble some of its models locally. These models include the Himalayan, Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650. This is the brand’s first overseas manufacturing facility outside India.

The facility is situated in Buenos Aires, the country’s capital. It has been set up in partnership with Grupo Simpa, Royal Enfield’s local distributor in Argentina since 2018. Considering the monumental development, the inauguration event was attended by none other than Alberto Fernández, President of Argentina.

In addition, the country’s police has employed the services of Royal Enfield Himalayan. The police have inducted a specific number of Himalayan units into its force, with special blue livery. There are also some modifications made, it has the PFA (Argentina Police) logo on the fuel tank of Himalayan, there is a PA system installed along with police lights.

This is a proud moment for Indian bike brand Royal Enfield as well as its fans in India, as a Police Force of another country inducts RE motorcycles into their force for official use. Himalayan is being used by select units of the Indian Police as well. Some time back, Royal Enfield in association with Bengaluru Police drafted ‘We for Women‘. This is an all women police officer’s brigade – focusing on making life for women and children safer in the city.

Apart from Argentina, the iconic Indian bike maker has five exclusive stores in China while there are 31 stores and 40 other retail touch points spread across Latin America. Overall, the brand has its presence in over sixty countries across the globe. Furthermore, with new launches lined up, Royal Enfield may decide to locally produce the upcoming models in Argentina and export it to the rest of Latin America.

Upcoming Launch

In India, Royal Enfield is currently gearing up for the launch of the much anticipated Meteor 350 which will replace the Thunderbird 350 and 350X from the company’s lineup. The Meteor 350 will be a cruiser motorcycle and will be offered in three derivatives- Fireball, Stellar and Supernova.

The Meteor 350 is going to be the first model under the new range of UCE350 motorcycles from Royal Enfield. This new range will employ a completely new 350cc air-cooled motor and a brand new platform called ‘J1D’. This new engine ditches the old push-rod tech for a SOHC setup. The new generation classic 350 will also fall under this category.

The new 350cc powertrain is said to put out 20.2 bhp and 27 Nm of peak torque. This is 0.4 bhp more but 1 Nm less than the older unit. The bike will come with technology such as Bluetooth technology, inbuilt turn-by-turn navigation called ‘Tripper Navigation’ and much more. The bike is expected to go on sale in a few days’ time.

Looks like we just got an order for the new DRDO's Shivalik Multi Mode Hand Grenades (MMHG) from Indonesia. Multiple news articles pointing to it.

EEL is a 100% subsidiary of Solar Industries, a city-based company. EEL has also signed a MoU for supply of the grenades to Indonesia.

Further, impressed by the safety and lethality of Multi-Mode Hand Grenades, Indonesia and other foreign countries have shown their interest to buy the grenades from Solar Industries. Indonesia has already placed an order for the grenades as the Indian government has already given in-principle approval to Economic Explosives Limited to supply the grenades to Indonesia.

The Indian government’s bold decision to open up the ammunition manufacturing sector for private agencies is paying rich dividends as until a decade ago, ammunition manufacturing was in the sole domain of government agencies and it was beyond the imagination that the private sector could foray into this field.

GRSE’s Exports to Reach New Pinnacle

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE), India’s premier public sector shipbuilding company since 1960, began the New Year on a grand note as the company bagged two back-to-back exports orders from the governments of Guyana and Seychelles for an Ocean-Going Cargo-cum-Passenger Vessel and a Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) respectively. “With the successful delivery of these two vessels, our export initiatives will touch a new pinnacle. We are well on our way to become a global maritime security player as these export contracts would help open new avenues in value creation,” said Rear Admiral Vipin Kumar Saxena, IN (Retd.), Chairman and Managing Director, GRSE. In an interview with Aeromag, he shares the insights into the company’s prowess as a world class shipbuilder capable of delivering state of the art maritime platforms across the globe.

Could you talk about the twin export orders that GRSE has bagged this year ?

For GRSE, the year began on a grand note as the company bagged two back-to-back exports orders from the governments of Guyana and Seychelles. The first export contract of the year worth 12.7 million USD was signed on 13 January for building an Ocean-Going Cargo-cum-Passenger Vessel for the Government of Guyana. The 1700 tons (appx) vessel is to be used on the coastal and riverine areas of Guyana.

Within a month of signing the contract with Government of Guyana, we were successful in signing another export contract with the Government of Seychelles for one Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) on 3 February. The SCG Ship ‘Zoroaster’, will be delivered to Coast Guard of Seychelles, the archipelagic island country. The ship will be a powerful, fuel-efficient platform designed to perform multipurpose operations, such as patrolling, anti-smuggling, anti-poaching, and search and rescue (SAR) while flaunting improved habitability features with fully air-conditioned modular accommodation for 35 personnel.

Our in-house design team has developed the overall design of the FPV. The FPVs are very versatile and cost effective platforms that can be put to excellent use by the small maritime nations especially in the IOR and MENA regions.

What significance do these export contracts hold for GRSE ?

GRSE is already endowed with the confidence of Govt. of India, the Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard having successfully built and delivered more than 100 Warships ranging from Patrol boats to Corvettes & Frigates. We immensely value the trust that they have bestowed upon us and now we are well on our way to become a global maritime security player as these export contracts would help open new avenues in value creation. GRSE has happily embraced infrastructure modernisation with technology induction and I am proud to share that our indigenous and state-of-the-art ship-design and ship-building capacity are the key behind the monumental success of brand GRSE.

We have the capability to construct 20 ships concurrently, using our modernized infrastructure and ‘Modular Integrated Construction Philosophy’. Further, our dedicated, multi-disciplinary, strong Design Team is continuously working towards developing various concept designs for ships that can cater to the current and future requirements of India as well as foreign nations. As you may be aware GRSE was the first shipyard of India to have exported a warship when we delivered a Multi Role Offshore Patrol Vessel to Mauritius, the CGS Barracuda. With the successful delivery of these two vessels, our export initiatives will reach a new pinnacle.

Moreover, the contracts, while strengthening diplomatic ties of Government of India with Governments of Guyana and Seychelles, celebrates the partnership with these nations, and is a grand achievement, not only for GRSE, but also for the entire nation.

What according to you helped GRSE bag these contracts ?

I dedicate the contracts to the remarkable performance of the shipyard over the last few decades that were made possible by farsighted planning, meticulous execution, courageous decisions and conviction and dedication of the Team GRSE. Special credit goes to our in-house design team who has over the years developed capability of building world-class warships deftly armed with high-tech infrastructure. Over the last six decades, we have built 787 platforms, including 106 warships for Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and Mauritius Coast Guard. This has helped GRSE attain the delightful epithet of ‘only organization to build and deliver a century of warships in India’. From building 5 tonne boats to 24,600 tonne Fleet Tanker, GRSE has done it all and has proved its mettle as a pioneer warship builder of India.

What is the way forward for GRSE and what are the expansion plans ?

Today, GRSE has crafted a niche in the field of in-house design and shipbuilding and has made significant contributions to the indigenous warship construction program in India. Indigenization has always been the watchword at GRSE and it has established its capabilities for in-house ship design and shipbuilding, across its three distinct shipbuilding units in Kolkata. This perfectly aligns with the Government of India's ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan’. The 100+ strong, dedicated and multi-disciplinary design team of the company relentlessly works towards developing innovative concept and designs for ships that impeccably cater to the current and future requirement of Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard. The company is now well on track to construct state-of-the-art warships harnessing advanced modular shipbuilding technology which is delightfully at par with the best in the world

One another significant step towards Self-reliance, Modernisation and capacity augmentation at the Rajabaghan Dockyard unit dedicated for medium and small ships construction will facilitate concurrent construction of 24 ships from the existing capacity of 20.

At GRSE we are constantly striving to shift to smart manufacturing (Industry 4.0), with sparked innovations in automation, robotics and the industrial internet of things. I am confident that by introducing Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Interoperability and secured connectivity enabling real time monitoring, control and optimization of processes, resources and systems will lead to significant workload consolidation across all spheres of operation.

We are also focusing on making the GRSE built versatile maritime platforms available to our friendly foreign Navies and Coast Guards. We look forward to collaboration with local shipbuilders and design houses in friendly nations towards building collective Maritime competence in the region.
