Indian Defence Exports

The Armenian Army purchased Indian 155-mm MArG howitzers manufactured by Bharat Forge. The MarG wheeled self-propelled gun was developed by Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited and was first shown in 2021. The MArG self-propelled gun is equipped with a 155 mm gun with a barrel length of 39 calibers and mounted on a 4 = 4 vehicle. The MarG self-propelled gun is equipped with an armored cabin for a crew of five and has a modern fire control system. It is stated that the MArG 155-BR self-propelled gun is capable of conducting long-term fire with a rate of fire of 42 rounds in 60 minutes. In intensive fire mode, the rate of fire of the self-propelled gun is 12 shots in three minutes. The firing range of the self-propelled gun is up to 24 kilometers, the transportable ammunition load is 18 shells. The time to bring the self-propelled gun into combat position is up to 2 minutes. The weight of the MarG self-propelled gun is 18 tons.

Armenia buys Indian Akash air defense systems. Armenia and India have entered into an agreement to purchase Indian Akash air defense systems; the contract is valued at $720 million. The Akash air defense system began to be developed in 1983 by the Defense Research and Development Laboratory; production of the air defense system began in 2008 by Bharat Dynamics Ltd. At the moment, two types of Akash air defense systems are produced in India - a basic one with a destruction range of up to 30 kilometers and an upgraded one with a destruction range of up to 70 km. Which of these two types of air defense systems Armenia ordered is still unknown. The Akash air defense system can be mounted on a T-72 or BMP-3 wheeled or tracked chassis. The Akash air defense system includes: - a launcher with three anti-aircraft missiles, - a multifunctional radar "Rajendra" capable of detecting targets at a range of up to 60 kilometers, as well as a control point. The complex's radar with a phased array antenna allows simultaneous tracking of up to 64 targets and guidance of up to 12 missiles. The air defense system is equipped with missiles with a warhead weighing about 60 kilograms and a flight speed of 1000 m/s. The air defense system can hit targets at altitudes of up to 19 kilometers.

Indian shells & charges have proved to be compatible with German PZH2000, French CAESAR & Polish KARB SPGH.


On the other side of the conflict, Russia is using Indian spec T-90A, initially built for the IA, against Ukraine.


Russia is using its surplus INR reserves to purchase machine tools, CNCs, sheet metal machinery, auto parts and other engineering goods from India. The value of India's engineering goods exports more than doubled to over $1 billion in nine months through December.

I have witnessed this myself. I was at an international manufacturing trade fair In Bangalore last month. There were more Russian businessmen there than all other foreign visitors combined.

Myanmar Navy's Kyan Sittha-class frigates have a significant amount of Indian made hardware.

The propulsion setup is very similar to the IN's Kamorta class ASW corvettes. The engines used are the Pielstick 12PA 6 STC6 diesel engines license manufactured in India. The reduction gear box is from Elcon & GRSE provides the controllable pitch propellers.

Kyan Sittha-class frigates uses the Oto Melara 76mm as its primary naval gun. It is not known if those guns are directly imported from Italy for from BHEL-Haridwar. The ships use BEL's hull mounted HUMSA-HMX sonars. The frigates also use the Sheyna torpedoes, BDL exported those torpedoes.

The ships originally came equipped with a Chinese surface search radar & the BEL RAWL-2 for AD/volume search roles. Older photo from 2018:

The Myanmar Navy has switched from the RAWL-2 to REVATHI in just a few years of use. While IN is still receiving destroyers with RAWLs. The RAWLs aren't great but they are not terrible either. Perhaps the reason for the relatively quick retirement of the RAWLs & an early adoption of the REVATHI is the VL-SRSAM.

Currently the only AD on the Kyan Sittha-class frigates are 2 units of a Chinese copy of the AK-630 & some Igla-S MANPADS. VL-SRSAM could fill the medium range SAM role quite well, assuming the ships has enough underdeck space to accommodate a 16/32 cell VLU.

Maybe BDL has an export order coming.

What do we export to Turkey, apart from raw materials , explosives detonators etc? Post 2019-20 Govt did not give clearance for multiple export orders.
