Indian Defense Industry General News and Updates

Surely not Rafales as of now. F16s very much possible. F16s, F18s, Tranche 1 EF2000s , these are possible. Rafales aren't surplus as of now.

Tankers and Minesweepers are the most logical acquisitions on this model first of all.

Followed by Armour/Artillery from European countries. That is a good option too.
Alright = but then the same question applies - "won't these come with string attached? i.e. limits on where, when and who is it used against? "

As things stand, India is far from being self-reliant in its defence requirements, while only being a marginal player in exports. According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India’s arms imports declined by 32% in the five-year period from 2015-19, as compared to 2010-14. Yet, India remained the second-largest arms importer in the world in the period 2015-2019, 56% of which came from Russia alone. In terms of exports, India ranks 23rd, having merely 0.2% of the share of global exports.

That's why its easier to lease training platforms or support platforms like tankers than assets which might be used directly.

Didnt know one could lease offensive weapon systems like rafales etc - still won`t these come with string attached? i.e. limits on where, when and who is it used against?

Yeah, but the main goal is to bolster our forces against China, not Pakistan. So we will not have any restrictions against China when it comes to the US. The Americans are more worried we will invade some small country using their weapons, rather than Pakistan or China, in the future, as we become more powerful.

The French and Israelis don't care what you do as long as you don't go around killing civilians, and we are also good on that front since we don't.

Weapons systems are not leased, generally, unlike the Akula which didn't have the buy option, but exceptions can be made. We have deployed some Israeli owned SAMs in Ladakh right now, those can be converted to a term lease for example, with a "you use them, you buy them" clause.

Can't simly lease weapons systems that we do not operate in the first place. Or else there's no point to deploying it quickly, it will take years to train the pilots for F-16s, for exmaple.

The French have lots of Rafales in surplus.

So what are going to lease?

I thought tankers from Russia..
AWACS from Israel?
C17 , helis (for IA, IAF & IN) from USA ..

IAF is not interested in IL-78 tankers. They want Airbus and Boeing airframes.

Israel doesn't have the AWACS we need, and in the numbers needed.

C-17s, yeah, but the USAF also needs them. Some may possibly come in though. Helis, yeah, but we have to see. Apaches may be possible. There is a possibility of getting M777s.
