So, the Railway Board has denied in a statement that there is any move to import sixty trainsets. Also, says that they are committed to inducting 40 Train-18 units (640 coaches) & the delays are due to standardization etc. Let's hold them to this. ( )

Alstom India to double output by April 2020

Company says not hit by slowdown

The Indian subsidiary of France’s Alstom said it planned to double its production capacity by April 2020 and increase headcount by 70% in three years, said a top official.

“We have not been affected by the economic slowdown as there is increasing need for mobility,” said Alain Spohr, MD, India and South Asia, Alstom.

“We have ongoing orders in hand for Montreal Metro, Mumbai Metro and Sydney Metro. The last batch of trainsets for Chennai Metro will be despatched soon.”

According to company officials, the order for Montreal Metro will be completed by 2021, Mumbai Metro 3 by 2022, Sydney Metro by 2023 and the e-locomotive orders by 2026.

Currently, Alstom India exports 50% of its production. “We are happy with the production mix of 50:50. And it would stay at this level. The indigenisation level is about 75%.

On Tuesday, the company announced the commencement of a new production line for the manufacture of rolling stock for Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) Line 3 (Aqua line) valued at €452 million.

The order includes 31 light-weight, fully-furnished, modern metro trains of eight cars each.

“We have established a new production line at Sri City for MMRC. The first metro train, after testing, will be delivered by November 2020,” he said.

He added Alstom had 4,700 employees at its four facilities in India and this would rise to 8,000 in the next three years. The company had been recruiting more than 100 people over the last 18 months.

Asked about the break-even level, he said the Indian subsidiary would achieve the level over the next two to three years.

On production capacity, Mr. Spohr, said the Sri City plant in Andhra Pradesh had the capacity to produce 240 trainsets annually. “We are on track to double our manufacturing capacity from 240 to 480 trainsets per annum for executing current orders,” he said.

Integral Coach Factory gets nod to build 45 Vande Bharat trains

A letter from the railway board directs the Chennai factory to immediately proceed with production.

The railway board has finally given a green signal to the Integral Coach Factory ( ICF) in Chennai to start production of 45 Vande Bharat trains. A letter from AK Agarwal, additional member (mechanical) of the board, on December 14 to the general manager of ICF railway board stated that the factory needs to proceed with the procurement process immediately with the specification issued by Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO).

Earlier, the tendering process was halted due to controversies over allegations that a private firm was being favoured.

The letter from Agarwal also stated that if any modification is required in the pre-bidding process, the ICF will be authorised to look into it. The letter says that by 2022, 45 trains should be ready to roll.

Also known as Train 18, Vande Bharat is India’s first semi high-speed train, whose average speed will be 100 km per hour. They will replace Shatabdi Express and run between metros and other big cities, including Mumbai-Nashik, Mumbai-Pune and Mumbai-Ahmedabad.

The trains yet to be manufactured will be 15-20 per cent lighter than the current Vande Bharat trains plying between Delhi and Varanasi and Delhi and Katra. The new ones will cut travel time by at least 20 per cent.

Mumbai Mirror had reported on December 8 that a senior officer of the railways, who was part of the production team of Vande Bharat, had alleged that the administration was unnecessarily harassing the top nine officers associated with the project. He had also complained that efforts were on to import the trains in order to sabotage the Make-in-India project.

However, the latest letter has put an end to the controversy, giving ICF a free hand to carry out its work.

The project had run into rough weather back in July when the railway ministry directed ICF to cancel all tenders related to Vande Bharat Express. The ministry’s move was prompted by several complaints of favouritism in tendering process.
