Railways to invest Rs 75,000 crore on signalling system project: Piyush Goyal
By PTI | Mar 8, 2018, 10.47PM IST

BENGALURU: The Indian Railways would invest Rs 75,000 crore on a signalling system project to be implemented across India, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said today.

"We will bring the most modern technology of European Train Control System level II (ETCS) in India and it will be implemented across the country. It will ensure safe journey," he told reporters here.

He said the South Western Railway officials have prepared the pre-feasibility report for the long-pending Bengaluru suburban railway and come up with a Rs 12,000 crore investment plan.

Goyal said 68 km of the 160 km suburban railway network will be elevated. In addition, the Railways would invest Rs 5,000 crore for upgrading the stations and for bringing in the most modern locomotives rail coaches.

He said he had written to the Karnataka chief minister in January that instead of 80-20 ratio of cost sharing between Karnataka government and Railways, where Karnataka's share would be 80 per cent, he has proposed a 50-50 cost sharing.

"We can do a cost sharing of 50-50 between the state government and the Indian railways and against that, they (state government) can allow us to increase the Floor Area Ratio (FAR) or Floor Space Index (FSI) of all our stations to five, so that we can raise some revenue by developing the stations, making them modern and passenger friendly."

According to the minister, the modern coach factory at Rae Bareli, last year, has sent the Railway ministry a proposal to manufacture 5,000 LHB coaches every year, up from 1,000 coaches. Indian Railways had the capacity to manufacture 4,000 LHB coaches each year. There are 20,000 LHB coaches in use and it would take around 5 years to to replace all ICF coaches with LHB ones, the minister has said earlier. He also said that in 4-5 years of time span, ICF coaches will be history.

Indian Railways’ Track Maintenance to get Tech-Rich, to Cost Rs.2700 Crore
26 Feb 2018

NEW DELHI: Stepping up its efforts to prevent train derailments, Indian Railways is opting for the latest technology to reduce its dependence on manual inspections and to improve the track maintenance system of its rail network. Automatic track geometry-cum-video inspection systems, ballast regulating machines, rail grinding machines, automated multifunction track recording cars and ultrasonic flaw detection systems (USFD) are some of the modern equipment to be procured by the state-run transporter at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,726 crore.

The Railways has allocated Rs. 7,267 crore in the 2018-19 budget for safety-related works — including track inspection, repair and maintenance — a massive jump from Rs. 1,933 crore in 2017-18, underlining the top priority its is giving to accident prevention measures.

“Till now, the Railways depended heavily on manual monitoring method to detect cracks in rail, defective fittings, ballasts, concrete sleepers and other track-related systems,” said a Railway Ministry official.

The inspection of tracks has a clear bearing on safety and with increased train speeds and traffic, manual inspections are not only becoming unsafe for the inspecting staff but are also becoming difficult due to the shorter intervals between running trains.

“Now the focus is to shift from the manual method to state-of-the-art technology like the automatic track geometry-cum-video inspection system to detect defects. It is a proven technology and operational worldwide, including in Germany and Britain,” the official said.

In the first phase, these will be fitted under the last coach or the guard’s van of fast-moving Rajdhani trains. The system is capable of recording track geometry and video footage of track components which can be assessed by officials for necessary action.

“We are procuring 16 automatic track geometry-cum-video inspection systems, and 12 vehicular USFD machines to detect flaws in the tracks,” the official said.

Besides, the Railways is also acquiring eight rail grinding machines to remove minute cracks on the tracks and 40 axle box accelerometers to detect unevenness on the rails.

The Railways shopping list also includes 30 ballast regulating machines, 20 ballast cleaning machines and four automated multifunction track recording cars to strengthen and upgrade its track maintenance systems.

In a first such initiative, the Western Railway has joined hands with automobile giant Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) to transport its cars by train from its plant in Gujarat to other parts of India, an official said here on Saturday.

The first such train (rake) loaded with 125 Maruti-Suzuki cars in 25 NMG coaches left the Maruti plant in Detroj to Nidvanda in Bengaluru Division of South-Western Railway, a distance of 1m716 km.

The entire consignment of cars was loaded in less than four hours, said WR Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Bhakar.

The Indian Railways tie-up with MSIL is expected to benefit the carmaker’s new manufacturing facility near Becharji station in Patan district which produces around 250,000 vehicles per annum, with plans to increase the production capacity in future.

For the operation from Detroj, MSIL and WR have developed a stacking area of 8000 square metres with a capacity to stack for handling up to two NMG rakes.

The Detroj railway station itself has been developed with minimum capital expenditure with MSIL partnering with Indian Railways in the transportation business.

Bhakar said the WR will not only transport the manufactured cars to all destinations in the country but also provide logistic solutions for export of the vehicles.

“This initiative is a great beginning for the development of industry and Gujarat state for making it a hub of car production in near future,” he said.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has lauded the new freight loading initiative commenced by the WR.

“From transporting autos to Amul butter, Indian Railways gives you the most economical, safe, timely and environment friendly transportation. Adopt it today!” he tweeted.

Mumbai Ahmedabad route needs 100,000 passenger per day to break even.
At 7 trains running in either direction , with peak passenger load per train @2000 , it'd still be 28000 per day. How did you arrive at such a figure assuming it's accurate ?

It's not my figure. There was an article by a prof from IIM Ahmedabad and the number of 100,000 was outcome of his analysis based on the loan repayment terms.

Why should the number of trains be limited to only 7?

That's what the article says. That the no of trips from either direction will be 14 i.e 7 from each side , initially.
