China has almost total control over our EV industry and the automobile industry in general. Massive headache, in a war time situation they could totally cut off the supply of these rare earth metals, magnets etc. and we would be left reeling.
It will take decades for us to build a supply chain for our industry but we need to begin now.

Magnet-free motors aren't anything new. Tesla had induction motors in some of their vehicles irrc. It is just that those magnetic motors provide more efficiency and lighter compared to these types of motors.
