This is an excellent interview of Dr Ishtiaque Ahmed, author of the recent biography of Jinnah, which primarily seeks to debunk Ayeha Jalal's argument that Jinnah used the threat of Pakistan as a bargaining chip to garner more concessions from the Congress & the British, laying the blame for partition at the doors of the Congress primarily .
This thesis of Ayeha Jalal seems to have acquired a fair deal of traction among our own aman ka tamasha lobby including neo converts to it like Jaswant Singh & LK Advani who endorsed it in his book & publicly , respectively for different reasons.
Dr Ahmed does a stellar job debunking with firm evidence Jalal's argument such that the exasperation on Thapar's face & demeanor comes thru quite clearly. To his credit he does try his utmost to be a non partisan commentator & indeed succeeds for the most part though not for the entirety of the interview for obvious reasons.
To conclude, Dr Ahmed certainly qualifies to the title of an honest public intellectual & a very rare honest public intellectual at that for it's next to impossible to find one in Pakistan on the subject of Jinnah & partition , more so someone who systematically demolishes all claims that Jinnah was a secularist in the final reckoning or even a modernizing force of Islam or someone who had the best interests of the Indian Muslims of the British Raj at heart.
He paints the image of someone who was monomaniacal about his aim of securing a separate homeland for sub continental Muslims & succeeded at it in spite of the odds at tremendous costs to everyone , ruthlessly pursuing his aims, leaving a legacy of hate & destruction which's poisoned relationship between the two people & nations ever since.
Along with Venkat Dhulipalia's A New Medina which came out earlier & also systematically debunked Jalal's thesis, making an excellent companion piece to Dr Ishtiaque Ahmed's Jinnah, it's mandatory reading for those interssted in the two nation theory & the tortured history of those times.
