Altaf Hussain to UN: Hold Pakistan accountable for war crimes, ethnic cleansing, rights violations

Pakistan must be held accountable for war crimes, ethnic cleansing and human rights violations, Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) founder Altaf Hussain said on Friday.
Addressing the 37th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) via Skype from London where he is in self-exile, Hussain said, "The United Nations, must ensure that Pakistan is held accountable for its actions, pressure must be applied by member states to ensure that Pakistan stops violating one's rights, which is not only afforded by the United Nations conventions, but enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan."
He further said, "Unfortunately, Pakistan being a signatory to the United Nations since its very inception, has completely disregarded all conventions, resolutions and UN notices, a complete disregard to humanity.. The atrocities which are being carried out by the state go beyond anyone's imagination. In fact, they amount to war crimes, ethnic cleansing, genocide amounts to a war crime."
Targeting Pakistan's armed forces and in particular the Pakistan Army, the MQM founder called on the UN and all of its other allied organisations to take them to task.
"Those corrupt military personnel who support and implement must be held accountable as war criminals, they must be tried before the ICJ (International Court of Justice in The Hague). I request member states to support me and my community, help us to bring these criminals to justice. Mass murderers must be held accountable," Hussain said.
Urging the United Nations to hold an urgent summit and place Pakistan before those responsible and seek answers from them, the MQM founder also flagged the issue of what he described as the "ethnic cleansing" of "my fellow Balochis, Pashtoons and people from FATA."
"I am steadfast, and I am fully aware of the ethnic cleansing which is being carried out against you. Till my last breath I will not remain silent, where I speak for the Mohajirs I will speak for all those who are oppressed by these tyrants, irrespective of their ethnic belonging, religious belief, cast, colour or creed. You have me to raise your plight," Hussain said during his stirring speech.
He also used his address and the platform of the UNHRC to highlight the struggle of the Mohajirs since the partition of the Indian subcontinent in August 1947.
He said that he had formed a progressive, liberal and democratic Mohajir Quami Movement (MQM) in 1984 with the objective of raising the voices of the community at all legislative forums across Pakistan and the world, and to highlight the oppression and victimization faced by them from the Pakistani military regime since Pakistan's inception nearly 71 years ago.
He said, "I represent all those human beings who have been oppressed by the Pakistani military regime, since the very inception of Pakistan, and in particular the Mohajirs who had migrated from India to Pakistan in 1947. It may seem strange to you, but the undeniable truth is that I have been banned to speak to my millions of followers, the Government of Pakistan has placed a media ban on me, my voice, my photos, my name cannot appear in any electronic medium which is used to express ones voice, the crime for being banned ?"
"I am not the only leader who has spoken against the state, many other leaders in Pakistan have criticised the state, but not a single action was taken against them, because they are regarded as son of the soil, and the Mohajirs are not classed as equal citizens, no one dare speak for them..I was forced into exile in 1992, many attempts were made to assassinate me, over 22,000 Mohajirs have been butchered by the state machinery, but no voice was raised by our fellow citizens, silence prevailed, I was the only voice in Pakistan to speak out to highlight that religious extremism is breeding and will soon take over Pakistan, this was not liked by the rulers, and I was subjected to silence," he added.
He maintained that since 2013, Mohajirs are again being subjected to an intense military-led crackdown.
"Over 84 extra-judicial killings have taken place, over 450 have been the subjects of enforced disappearances, and thousands are languishing in arbitrary detention, without access to their due rights, their only crime, allegiance to Altaf Hussain," he said.

In official communication, India accuses Pakistan of blocking govt websites - Times of India

NEW DELHI: While the current round of hostility between India and Pakistan has largely been attributed to the raid on an Indian residential complex + in Islamabad, it might owe its genesis also to, as South Block sources told TOI, Pakistan’s decision to block access to all Indian government websites (gov.in) in May 2017. Pakistan on Friday also pulled out of the WTO ministerial meeting which will be held in India next week.

Stating that the Indian government websites had opened only intermittently since then in Pakistan, official sources said as many as 5 note verbale (a form of diplomatic communication) had been issued to Pakistan to not block access to any Indian government website.

The first note verbale was issued on May 18 2007 and the latest one only earlier this week. According to Indian authorities, Pakistan has done this deliberately to not allow Indian diplomats and officials to access their own government websites. It, however, also meant that the Indian high commission was inundated with complaints from Pakistan nationals who said they were unable to access Indian visa forms.

"This has led to mushrooming of agents who have helped Pakistan nationals fill up visa forms through proxy servers,’’ said an official here, adding that this had also affected the normal functioning of the Indian mission.

Diplomatic sources said Pakistan has pulled out of the WTO ministerial meeting scheduled to take place here March 19-20 amid signs that the ongoing diplomatic standoff could worsen further. While the WTO meeting was always going to be a multilateral engagement, India's decision to invite Pakistan commerce minister Pervaiz Malik for the event was seen as an outreach to Pakistan and a sign of a possible thaw in the relationship. Malik was earlier said to have confirmed his participation.

Pakistan's 'net reserves stand at minus $724m'

ISLAMABAD: In a disclosure that could jolt the country’s financial markets, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has said Pakistan’s net international reserves after excluding its foreign exchange liabilities are negative $724 million.

As of February 14, Pakistan’s Net International Reserves stood at minus $724 million – down from $7.5 billion in September 2016 when the three-year IMF programme had ended, according to the IMF report released on Thursday.

It said that Pakistan’s foreign exchange liabilities were $13.5 billion as against its gross official reserves of $12.8 billion as of February 14.

However, the reserves further slipped to $12.23 billion by March 2, which means the net international reserves were negative $1.22 billion.

The IMF reached the minus $724 million net international reserves figure after it excluded the $5.4 billion loans that the State Bank of Pakistan had obtained through currency swaps, $6.3 billion IMF loans, $1.03 billion Chinese currency swaps and $700 million liabilities of other commercial banks.

Pakistan all set to seek $2 bn from friendly country

ISLAMABAD: With the general elections looming and the federal budget on the anvil, the government is all set to knock at the doors of friendly countries to rattle up two to three billion US dollars to meet international obligations, The News learnt.

As per the arrangement being negotiated with a friendly country, a trusted friend of Pakistan has assured of depositing about $2 billion in its account as safe deposit as was done in 2000. It means that this amount will reflect in Pakistan’s account to keep its image positive but Pakistan will not be able to use this amount, sources confided.

Negotiations with the brotherly Muslim country having a generous attitude towards Pakistan in the past are also under way and there is expectation that a relief of about $1.5 billion will be provided to Pakistan. A source without giving details of this arrangement stated this was also done in past, when after nuclear tests, the US had slapped sanctions on Pakistan and there was a serious threat of default. At that time, a desperate Nawaz Sharif government had frozen the foreign currency accounts. This practice was also exercised during the Nawaz Sharif government in 1999. At that time, the brotherly country had requested not to make this arrangement public but Pakistan’s then secretary finance had immediately informed the US about this arrangement, sources confided.
