Metro Rail Projects in India


Titagarh has manufactured the rolling stock in collaboration with its Italian subsidiary it acquired a few years ago. The entire profile is Aluminium . This last part is interesting as Sudhanshu Mani has reported in plenty of interviews that Indian public as well as Pvt sector lack the technology to work with Alu profiles for which he suggested IR thru ICF Chennai tie up with a foreign collaborator for ToT & manufacturing of the VB rolling stock if IR is to meet it's target of 400 VB train sets in 6-7 yrs if not 3-4 yrs.

Reports suggest upto 70% local components used though they haven't specified which parts .

This here is an interesting development that bears closer scrutiny. The video says Titagarh Wagons acquired an Italian firm in 2015 that designed the Pune Metro trainset & was responsible for providing the technical back up for manufacturing. The entire profile is in Aluminium.

Now as per Sudhanshu Mani , India lacks expertise in developing & working with Aluminium profiles for construction of rolling stock which is why he recommended a JV of ICF with a foreign firm where they would work jointly in developing the Train 20 in Aluminium profile & the former understands the technological implications as far as R&D & mfg goes . This , in turn , would go a long way in executing the IR's plan of mfg 400 VB train sets within the stipulated time period .

Hence , if Titagarh Wagons has indeed developed the technical base for mfg such Aluminium profile train sets , I don't see what's keeping ICF & IR from reaching a JV. Unless what Titagarh Wagons is undertaking is pure assembly work after having these Alumnium profiles manufactured by some 3rd party in a foreign country .

It helps to know that Titagarh Wagons doesn't figure in the list of 7 OEMs selected to manufacture 104 VB trainsets , IIRC . Whether they didn't participate or having participated weren't selected is unknown.
