Metro Rail Projects in India

on the occasion of Utkal Divas, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Saturday approved the plan for metro rail connecting Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Puri and Khurda.

Not sure about this one. The starting point is so absurd, god knows who created this plan. This money can be utilized to improve basic facilities like roads and drainage systems. Cuttack -Bhubaneswar needs better bus system, not a metro.

"Vande Metro will be a different format compared to Vande Bharat. It is being built in a format that trains with very high frequency, like around four-five times a day. It can ply between cities with a distance of less than 100 kilometres and they are comfortable and affordable. It will be ready around December," Vaishnaw told ANI.

This is a very confusing name for a project but an interesting concept to have high frequency + low capacity trains to connect cities within 100km of each other. I wouldn't be surprised to see "mini" Vande Bharat trains seeing as it's going to have to run on the standard broad gauge. For sure, they still need to build robust light rail infra in all T1, T2 and T3 cities.

Yeah , at this level of growth and population density i also doubt metro system ll work . Though bhubaneswar a good city to live with good roads , planned urban growth , parks etc and lots of good places to visit on weekend , in terms of economy it needs to score . Should bring in more IT , pharma investment . May be after 15/20 years population ll be good enough when more people from outside and inside state ll go there . Also there is a local bus service of govt called "mo bus " which i found good enough . And lets nt talk abt cuttack . Its unplanned old city . After my 10th had the opportunity to go to badambadi bus stand . I went to the toilet there . The condition was so bad ,when i came outside , i became a global citizen and lost my identity for many years :ROFLMAO: . Govt did try to make a new bus stand but local people protested .

Okay guys apart from Delhi Metro what else do we really have to brag about here? Yes, Mumbai Metro is growing at a rapid pace now too but all other light rail systems are in their nascent state with 3 car rakes, low to average ridership and not enough track to make a consenqutial impact on automobile traffic.

We have to suck it up and accept that as much as we'd like to be doing really well in rail infrascturcutre as a nation, we simply aren't quite there yet due to limited funding. Right now we're at the stage of testing pilot projects. Basic metro in T1/T2 cities, DFCs, RRTS and possibly some high speed track. The real work that needs to be done is overhauling the existing broad gauge rail network to accomodate for more express traffic and having extensive metro networks in T1/T2 cities to alleviate automobile traffic issues.

Don't get me wrong, we're totally heading in the right direction. RRTS for example is really a stroke of genius but all this infra build up has to happen at at least twice the pace it currently is.

Just my opinion. Feel free to counter.

Just to follow up from this, I'm wondering at what point we will have enough capital and ridership in current metro projects to bring them up to the level of Delhi Metro. Ie. 300+ km of track and high capacity rakes.

All proposed Metrolite projects which combined will add another 829km of track.
