In a major boost for connectivity in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the Union Ministry for Housing and Urban Affairs has issued a directive to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to build two Metrolite corridors between Rithala-Narela and Kirti Nagar-Dwarka Exhibition cum Convention Centre (ECC), reports Financial Express.

Similar to a normal train set operated by the Delhi Metro, a Metrolite train consists of only three coaches and can accommodate as many as 300 passengers in one go. Meanwhile, the cost of constructing a Metrolite system is about 30 per cent lesser than that of building a conventional Metro rail system.

The corridor proposed between Kirti Nagar and Dwarka's Sector 25 is 19 kilometres long and will be connected to three lines of the Delhi Metro, thus acting as a major feeder rail system to aid connectivity. Another corridor proposed between Rithala and Narela is 21.7 kilometres long.

The Delhi Metro will now be preparing Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the two corridors which will then be sent to the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD) for approval. Once the nod is received, the DPRs will then be sent to the centre, after whose nod, the project construction will begin.

It should be noted that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is a 50:50 joint venture between the GNCTD and the Government of India.

TBM S78 Achieves 1st Breakthrough for Pune Metro Project

by TMRG in Pune Metro

On New Year’s eve, tunnel boring machine (TBM) S78 “Mutha” operated by the Gülermak – Tata Projects Limited JV arrived at Pune Metro’s Agriculture College Shaft on the 16.589 km Line-1 to record the first ever breakthrough on the 5.09 km underground section between Range Hills and Swargate.

The Ø6.52m 100m long Terratec EPB TBM commenced excavation from the Range Hills Ramp on December 7 2019, and completed building the short 180m stretch of the up-line tunnel to the shaft in 24 days. From here on, the TBM will be dragged across the 25m x 25m wide & 18m deep shaft, built by J Kumar Infraprojects under a separate contract, for relaunch towards Shivaji Nagar Station.

Detailed alignment of the underground section can be viewed here on MahaMetro’s website.

The Gülermak – TPL JV won both underground packages of the line in early 2019 and was mandated by MahaMetro to deploy 4 TBMs (2 per package), but industry sources suggest only 3 will be commissioned. The 2 others include – TBM S79 “Mula” from the Range Hills Ramp and an unnamed TBM S81 from the Swargate Shaft.

Package UGC-01 (Rs. 864.71 cr) – Range Hills Ramp to Budhwar Peth with 2 stations at Shivaji Nagar & Civil Court.

Package UGC-02 (Rs. 826.24 cr) – Budhwar Peth to Swargate Shaft with 3 stations at Budhwar Peth, Mandai and Swargate.

As per Terratec
"Major challenges on the project will include tunnelling beneath century-old surface structures, crossing under the river Mutha and TBM lowering and dismantling in the very built-up areas of Budhwarpeth and Mandai stations with limited access available.
The versatile EPBMs have robust mixed-face dome-style cutterheads designed to work effectively in the compact Basalt that is expected on these contracts at pressures of up to 4 bar. As the TBMs progress, they will install 1,400mm wide by 275mm thick pre-cast concrete lining rings, which consist of five segments plus a key."

In mid-December, Gülermak – TPL JV celebrated casting their 1000th tunnel segment at the Deccan College casting yard – "An important milestone achieved by Pune Metro underground team by casting 1000 rings at Deccan College casting yard. Very soon these rings will be used by Tunnel Boring Machine to form tunnel from Shivajinagar to Swargate."

Pune Metro becomes fastest metro project in country to reach milestone of trials in just 30 months
Pune Metro: Work has gained pace after green light from new govt, with first stretch of 5 km likely to be launched in April.

After a lull last year because of the elections in May and November – work on the project started in December 2016.

When the Pune Metro carried out its first trial run earlier this month, it became the fastest to have reached the milestone (30 months) among Metro projects in the country. With the January-10 run being a precursor to technical trial runs and regulatory clearance and certification, work is on track for the first stretch of 5 km being operationalised in April this year. The entire Rs 11,420-crore project comprising two corridors of 31.25-km length is likely to be completed by March 2022.

The Pune Metro is being built by the Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha Metro), a 50:50 JV of the Centre and the Maharashtra government. Its first corridor, 16.589-km in length, would stretch from PCMC to Swargate and have five underground stations and nine elevated stations. The second corridor, 14.665-km in length, would extend from Vanaaz to Ramwadi and have 16 stations.

Trials will go on for two to three months on the first corridor and start in another two months on the second corridor, says Dr Brijesh Dixit, MD of Maha Metro. After a lull last year because of the elections in May and November – work on the project started in December 2016 – and an extended run of unseasonal rains, work has gathered momentum again, with tunnelling having started on the five-km underground stretch connecting Shivaji Nagar to Swargate and work on the priority overground stretches on Corridor-I and Corridor-II moving fast.

In what came as a relief to Pune residents who have to regularly suffer traffic congestion, the Pune Metro project has received a stamp of approval from the new Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi government, which has made news by scrapping the city’s Rs 5,000-crore High Capacity Mass Transit Route project in its current form and putting into cold storage the futuristic Hyperloop project linking Pune to Mumbai.

In fact, one of the first things that Eknath Shinde, the urban development minister, did after taking charge was to take stock of work on the Pune Metro project. Shinde also said the government would consider favourably all the expansion proposals for the project, besides ensuring that such infrastructure projects were implemented ahead of schedule. Ajit Pawar, the deputy CM, has expressed keenness to extend the Vanaaz-Ramwadi line to Wagholi via Chandni Chowk and extend the PCMC-Swargate line at both ends.

Even as the Pune Metro gears up to operationalise its first stretch in the coming months, Maha Metro is looking to enter Pune’s real estate business with around 10 million sq. ft of commercial space being created across the 30 Metro stations on the two corridors. Says Dixit, “more than 50% of Pune Metro’s revenues would accrue from non-fare sources, to ensure the financial viability of the project”.
