I assume these are upgraded MAWS/EW from what's on M2000Ihuh?
The rear seat of this Mirage 2000Whoa, all new hardware on the tail there.
ASRAAM Block 6 is a hell of a IR missile which even though is touted as dogfight missile has range close to 50kms, very advance British IIR seeker(replacing the previous American one) and very high speed(near Mach 4). All-in-all, a great addition for our Mig-29UPG. fleetINVITATION OF BIDS FOR INTEGRATION AND CERTIFICATION OF ASRAAM ON MiG-29 AIRCRAFT ALONG WITH ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT & TRAINING
Online bids (Two Bid System under OTE basis) are invited for integration & certification of ASRAAM, delivery of compatible launchers along with “O’ & ‘I’ level testers and MRLS for 56 MiG-29 aircraft (48 Fighter + 08 Trainer) as response to this RFP.

Why are they not placing order bulk order for local production with BDL?ASRAAM Block 6 is a hell of a IR missile which even though is touted as dogfight missile has range close to 50kms, very advance British IIR seeker(replacing the previous American one) and very high speed(near Mach 4). They are waiting for the facility at Hyderabad to be fully ready as some work is still pending. Mass production will start from next year as now it is our default CCM on most of our fighters(sans Rafale). Why are they not placing order bulk order for local production with BDL?
Nope, Order comes first not the facility. Its a public company you cant allocate capex based on guesswork. They are waiting for the facility at Hyderabad to be fully ready as some work is still pending. The first one is for ASRAAM Block 6.
AFAIK this is the only IIR seeker in India's A2A arsenal. Anyone have any info on any active indigenous program?ASRAAM Block 6 is a hell of a IR missile which even though is touted as dogfight missile has range close to 50kms, very advance British IIR seeker(replacing the previous American one) and very high speed(near Mach 4). There was a proposed IR/IIR variant of Astra MK1. It was later shelved later, can't really say why. Maybe bcoz the IAF decided to standardize the ASRAAM B6 as the IR-guided/CCM across the fleet.AFAIK this is the only IIR seeker in India's A2A arsenal. It was shelved because of ASRAAM's local production plans and ready-made status with a bleeding-edge IIR seeker. Astra MK1 IR also would have similar 50kms max engagement range but with 40G limits "off-the rails" whilst ASRAAM has 50G in the same context, so the latter offered better agility in dogfights while matching the proposed range of Astra IR in BVR. Hence IAF selected the MBDA missile over DRDO's.There was a proposed IR/IIR variant of Astra MK1. It was later shelved later, can't really say why. Lol, no. We have plethora of other missiles, both active as well as developmental that have IIR seeker in them like Nag/HELINA/Dhruvastra, MPATGM, SANT, VSHORADS, RudraM series missiles(2 & 3), NASM-SR, SAAW and even our ASAT features one.AFAIK this is the only IIR seeker in India's A2A arsenal. Almost everything listed above is either A2G or SSMs which surely needs a different IIR profile for ground vs air targets, and also the speed of the target to maintain lock.Lol, no. Tech-base is the same however difference lies in the software. ASAT also utilizes cryogenically cooled IIR seeker so does other PDV interceptors. Even AD-2 will have advance IIR seeker as per reports. VSHORADS also uses dual-band IIR seeker for aerial interceptions. All of the above seekers are designed for very high-speed targets allaying any doubts regarding their usage in an indigenous WVRAAM or BVRAAM.Almost everything listed above is either A2G or SSMs which surely needs a different IIR profile for ground vs air targets, and also the speed of the target to maintain lock.
VSHORADS is perhaps the only one that would be close, but I'm curious if again there is a SAM vs A2A element here that might not make them directly usable?
The challenge with the PDV/ASAT would be miniaturization and I doubt anylocally produced ASRAAM is getting ToT for the UK seeker. My hope here is again that funds are being released in time for somebody to finish up the research on what ought to be low hanging fruit.Tech-base is the same however difference lies in the software. PS: We have the tech, it's only a matter of time before DRDO develops complete in-house NGCCM. Till then locally produced ASRAAM will do the job.
