India will build a 'Sudarshan Chakra', a 'multi-layered framework' to integrate advanced surveillance, cyber protection, and physical safeguards to protect its citizens and infrastructure from enemy strikes, terrorist or otherwise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Friday.

This new defensive blanket will be similar to Israel's much-vaunted Iron Dome and the United States' proposed Golden Dome.

India already has a comparable system; the Integrated Air Command and Control System was a barrier Pakistan's missiles failed to penetrate for nearly 100 hours during Operation Sindoor.

But Mission Sudarshan Chakra- a nod to a story in Hindu mythology, of Sri Krishna shielding the Sun to help Arjuna defeat Jayadrath, to help good defeat evil - is expected to be more than a shield against missiles.

"By 2035, I want to expand, strengthen, and modernise this shield. Drawing inspiration from Lord Krishna, we have chosen the path of the Sudarshan Chakra... the entire system should be researched, developed, and manufactured in India," PM Modi said in his Independence Day speech.

"Every citizen must feel protected," the Prime Minister said.

Operational details are scarce at this time, of course, but sources told NDTV the Sudarshan Chakra will likely also offer precision counterstrike capacities and incorporate anti-cyber warfare measures to neutralise digital threats like hacking or phishing.

Eventually this would just be local mfg of S-400 subsequent systems and indigenous missiles for counter force measure under a single network?
I mean if the concept is both defence and attack then one single AD system would not do the same, neither should the aim be like a single launcher hosting both attack and defence missiles and firing off simultaneously .

It would be a network centric approach combining multi elements, multiple weapon systems?

'Sudarshan Chakra' would require very high speed quick reaction ABM system like Russian A-235 PL-19 Nudol in large numbers along with S 500 , THAAD like interceptors....... unlike United States, which has oceans separating it from its adversaries and therefore having enough time for interception...... We unfortunately do not have that luxury.........geographical proximity of enemy ballistic missile launch sites drastically shortens our reaction window, making rapid detection and interception capabilities essential.

Air-defence has played an exceptionally important role in the Iran war, with anti-missile systems, and not just in Israel, but also in the Gulf states and of course, the American bases playing a major role in intercepting Iranian missiles and drones. While there's a lot of discussion about Israel's Iron Dome system, India has begun a feasibility study on the Sudarshan Chakra air-defence system that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken about.

The feasibility study will consider the "elements" of Sudarshan Chakra, including what kinds of radars to have, and what kinds of air-defence weapons. Clearly, the system will have to be "layered." Also, the areas to be protected will be looked at. This, in all likelihood, will include the National Capital Region, the metro cities like Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bangalore, areas of great strategic importance like Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) establishments, highly placed sources said.

Much, of course, will depend on the budget, or, how much the initial allocation will be. That will decide how extensive the Sudarshan Chakra defensive system will be initially. Then, there will be additions till the entire country is covered. The Centre has spoken about putting it in place by 2035. The development and set-up process will be almost entirely Indigenous.
