Modi's story draws parallels with Nicolas Ceausescu. Immensely popular and in power for many years ... His own people will turn against him, spurring a downfall.

Pathetic decision tbh. Such steps will affect our international standing.

Those cannot stand on their own feet will always seek validation of their standings from foreigners.

Have the actions of recent American President's who caused destruction in Iraq Syria etc effected their or the their governments international standings. They are nothing less than war criminals yet ........... No American has the propensity or low esteem to seek international validation of their leaders .

Unfortunately low self-esteem is inherent in many Indians

Reminds me when Mulayam Singh Yadav was defence minister , and ISI had a field day.
But people then had no problem wrt international standing as long as the country was being fuked left and right.

When our country becomes a 10 trillion dollar industry then whatever u are saying would be fine ,not now. We have allies cz ours is a credible and matured democracy. We abide by democratic principles. Though China is a 14 trillion dollar economy yet it has less allies than us

What do our allies count for? Tomm, assuming war breaks out with Pakistan & we refuse mediation, you can bet the US & it's allies along with China will not only censure us but also sanction us. And this is Pakistan we're talking of, not China. As far as China goes, pls refer to the Doklam issue & check on who backed us. Last One recalls, barring Japan no one issued an open statement on our favour. The US claimed they were closely watching the situation. Russia asked both sides to resolve the issue thru talks in a very muted manner. I don't even recall what the UK & France said then, assuming they said anything.

Why would they? Do u support them like u expect them to support u?
U want American unwavering support? Send troops in Afghanistan. Did we? No so why would u think that Americans will support us.
Same with every other country.
U want to eat everyones cake, want to be in everyones goodbooks but dont want to a permanent stand.
If u follow the policy of non alignment ,u will get same in return.

Why should we? It's not our war nor is it in our interests. Besides, it's something we can't afford nor can we spare men & materials. My counter was to yours when you wrote we could essentially point our thumb to the US for their disapproval to us when we are a 10 trillion dollar economy. My point is we thumbed them in 1971 & in Kashmir since 1991 onwards, caveats included , or even in 1974 & 1998 ( Pokhran 1&2) when we were in a much worse position economically or militarily . Hope that takes care of your assumptions.

Fair enough. Agreed but what we face now is a much more dangerous rival in form of expansionist China. Either solve your disputes and negotiate for a sphere of influence or accept to become 2nd fiddle in Asia or jump into American camp and expect their full support to take on China.
Imo we have reached a peak in our non alignment policy. We need a firm stand on every issue.
Or else we shouldn't expect any unwavering support from any our allies.

There's no solving your disputes with China. It's gone beyond the territorial disputes, in case you've noticed. The territorial disputes existed till 2000. It still persists, no doubts about that but has been superceded by who will dominate Asia or at least South Asia. Plus there's the water disputes.Even as far as territorial disputes go, China hasn't compromised an inch on what they claim . It's always fait accompli with them. You accept their demand. This has a bearing on our disputes on J&K with Pakistan.

Regarding tying up with the US, it's an unreliable ally in the best of situations. More so under Trump. Besides, allying with the US & formalising the Quad is going to be a slow process & undertaken in a graduated manner.

This is nothing. I've seen some say 9/11 was America's fault. If they never made planes or built tall buildings it would've never happened.

yes. And this takes into account the fact that the jailed terrorist has no experience in defense.

That's you. Evidently there's a woke crowd there, who thinks otherwise, Paddy. Write in to the Guardian. You've quoted it so often here, I suspect you're a subscriber. Incidentally, the Guardian was very pro Irish Catlicks.
