For the first time after the Shahpur Kandi Dam was built in Punjab’s Pathankot district, work has begun to divert water from the Ravi river into the Ujh Barrage. This is the first time since Independence that Ravi river water will be used on a large scale in Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab. During the monsoon, the Ujh Barrage would hold water for only 2 to 3 months, after which the barrage would nearly dry up.
