Its election time in Pakistan and lot of things unfolding in not so acceptable ways. 70 dead in a terror attack on a day when Nawaz is supposed to return back. Many are saying its a ploy to shift away the focus from Nawaz homecoming, others suggesting it a way to hamper diplomatic process bringing normalcy in Pakistan.

Please discuss and how the results could impact Indo - Pak relations.

@Superkaif @safriz what you guys reckon?

Sad to see such huge innocent loss of life but until Pakistan put behind those that have bled the country like the Sharifs and Zardari clan in prison or better still hang them I doubt any change will occur. In fact I’m astounded to see still after Nawaz has been found guilty - how much support he has.
I would like IK to have a chance but hope he is not just a puppet of the army.
Will give you my opinions after the weekend bro - going away next couple of days to the beach to chill! 😎

Agreed that Nawaz/Zardai are corrupt to core, however I find Nawaz a bit better than Zardari.

Imran is for sure going to be an army guy, just look at how army, him and certain sections of judiciary are all hands in gloves. His soft spot for extremism and army tendency to use non state actors make them fit for each other.

However almost 100 lives in couple of days is too much a cost. RIP

Pakistan election: Scores killed in bomb attacks on poll rallies

A suicide bomber has killed at least 85 people and injured about 150 in an attack on a campaign rally in south-western Pakistan, officials say.

They say a provincial candidate was among the dead in the town of Mastung.

Earlier, a bomb attack on another election-related gathering killed four people in the northern town of Bannu. There are fears of further violence ahead of general elections on 25 July.

Meanwhile, former PM Nawaz Sharif was arrested after flying home from the UK.

Sharif and his daughter Maryam were taken into custody by officials from the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) after landing in the northern city of Lahore.

The three-term PM was ousted last year after a corruption investigation. Last week he was sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison.

He has accused Pakistan's powerful security establishment of conspiring against him ahead of the elections.

What is known about Friday's attack?
The attack in Mastung was the deadliest such incident in Pakistan in more than a year. There are fears that the death toll will rise further.

Among those killed was Baluchistan provincial assembly candidate Siraj Raisani, his family said.

He was a candidate for Balochistan Awami party.

Earlier in the day, a campaign convoy of another candidate was attacked in Bannu.

Akram Khan Durrani, who represents the MMA party, was unhurt, officials say.

Unexpected attacks
Analysis by BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad

Coming amid claims by the army that militants have been cleared from Pakistani areas, these attacks are unexpected.

Before the 2013 elections, militants had issued early warnings, resulting in a muted campaign by targeted parties.

Those same parties and groups appear to be targets again. These attacks may also trigger a new set of tensions ahead of an election already marred by controversy.

Significantly, all attacks have come in the aftermath of the conviction of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif by an anti-corruption court.

Friday's attacks came just hours before Sharif flew in from the UK to Lahore, and the city is under a lockdown ordered by authorities to prevent his supporters from staging a huge welcome for him.

On Tuesday, a suicide bomber hit a campaign gathering in the northern city of Peshawar, killing 22 people - including a provincial candidate.

The Pakistani Taliban said it had carried out that attack.

Tensions across Pakistan have been rising ahead of Sharif's return to the country.

Thousands of police officers have been deployed and shipping containers have been placed on some main roads in to block supporters from reaching the airport.

On Thursday, Sharif's PML-N party said hundreds of activists in Lahore had been detained ahead of Sharif's return.

Pakistan's general election
  • Voters will elect candidates for the 342-seat Pakistan National Assembly
  • The main parties are Nawaz Sharif's PML-N, former cricketer Imran Khan's PTI and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's PPP
  • It will mark the second time that one civilian government has handed power to another after serving a full term
  • The run-up to the vote has been marred by what observers say is a crackdown on political activists, journalists and critics of the powerful military
  • More than 371,000 troops will be deployed to protect the election and ensure it is "free and fair", the army says

The death toll has crossed 85 with scores more injured and the numbers are only rising. Truly a tragedy, especially in a country with a fragile democracy like Pakistan. Not reassuring in the least.

Death toll crossed 100. Until their core issues are not dealt with this is never going to stop.

Cost for what? And what is the threshold for 'high' cost? How do you set the bar?

Not for me to put a price on Pakistani lives, that is something them to decide. For me over 100 of families are mourning for adventures of few at power or looking to be in power.

I can understand that public is directly responsible to what their leadership is upto, but trust me they never sign up for it, they are there unconsciously.

1000s of Indian families have mourned because of Pak sponsored terrorism and many ordinary Pakistanis regularly donate to these terrorist organizations. Karma is just catching up!!

What karma catches up to Indians for 1000s of families to mourn?

This suicide attack may be politically motivated like other political murder happen in the subcontinent during election time...since in Pakistan suicide bomber and terrorist are plenty available why not use these available facilities, send some fresh pass out from terrorist school ,There is a continuous power struggle in Pakistan between establishment (ISI) and democratic party, hope this election will complete successfully without any vote rigging and whoever comes to power should cut the tail of this establishment (ISI) ,It won't be that easy as they have ruled Pakistan so many years but that's the way to bring peace, Imran Khan party is supported and funded by ISI and other parties competing with PTI ...maybe these parties will get a collation government if none of the parties will get a complete majority, No more coups since the USA already warned them no more military rule .
