Rohtang Tunnel: Big infrastructure boost for Himachal Pradesh! Next month, the 8.8 km long Rohtang Tunnel, which will be the world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet, is likely to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Recently, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Jai Ram Thakur was quoted in a PTI report saying that the tunnel will give all-weather connectivity to the border and remote areas of the state. The Rohtang Tunnel, which is a strategically important infrastructure project is being completed at a cost of around Rs 3,200 crore. According to the CM, a dream of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Rohtang tunnel is expected to be inaugurated by PM Modi in the last week of September.

According to the report, the 8.8 km long tunnel will be one of the longest road tunnels in the country. The strategic road tunnel is being constructed under Rohtang Pass in the Himalayas’ eastern Pir Panjal range.at an elevation of 10,171 feet. Once the Rohtang Tunnel is thrown open to the public, the distance between Manali and Lahual- Spiti’s administrative centre Keylong will be reduced by a distance of around 45 kilometres.

According to Thakur, the state government of Himachal Pradesh is cooperating with Indo – Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to develop helipads in areas bordering the neighbouring country China. The CM said that this will improve activities as well as access in the border areas.

It is expected that the Rohtang tunnel will save crores of rupees in transport costs. Earlier, the BRO officials had informed that the project was in a critical stage of development. They said that the construction works of the strategically important tunnel including installation of electro-mechanic fittings, lighting, Intelligent Traffic Control Systems, ventilation, road surface works, etc., were being executed. Meanwhile, another infra project is also being developed, which is a 100-meter length steel super structure bridge, across the Chandra river on Rohtang Tunnel’s North Portal.

The objectives were confirmed by a spokesperson of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on Friday as per a PTI report. .

"To provide express connectivity to Chandigarh from Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar, a greenfield spur from Ludhiana-Ropar road to Kharar (Chandigarh) has been approved. With the proposed connectivity, the travel time between Chandigarh-Amritsar would reduce to two hours in comparison to the present travel time of four hours," the spokesperson said.

The project will result in less travel times to Chandigarh from two major cities. The drive from Ludhiana to Chandigarh will be reduced to less than one hour, while that from Delhi Airport to Chandigarh Airport will be brought to under two hours via Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), Delhi-Katra Expressway.

Reaching Delhi faster

Though the spokesperson mentioned that a detailed project report for the proposed road is in progress, he/ she hinted at the travel times to Delhi from various cities up North.

With the proposed greenfield highway, travel time from Delhi to Chandigarh is estimated to be under two hours from about five hours at present. Similarly, Delhi to Manali will be around eight hours from 14 hours and Delhi to Amritsar will be four hours from about eight hours as per the spokesperson.

An earlier report hinted that Dwarka Expressway will be the take-off point from the airport to guide the commuters till their destination. Adequate information through signage will also be placed right from the Dwarka Expressway.

Such road development projects are aimed at improving the connectivity between the major cities of the country, enabling faster transport for tourists/ visitors and cargo alike. Connecting such industrial centres would also boost the economic growth between the centres, enabling a better trade practice through the road routes.

Purvanchal Expressway: Construction for one of India’s longest expressway in full swing! Over 50% work completed
Purvanchal Expressway: The country’s infrastructure to get a massive boost as soon, one of India’s longest expressway will be ready! At present, the development work on Purvanchal Expressway is under progress. According to the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA), the construction work on the ambitious expressway project is going on at full speed. So far, 51.23% of physical progress has been completed overall. The UPEIDA is executing the expressway project, for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh, in July 2018. The Purvanchal Expressway project is being developed at a cost of Rs 22,500 crore.

According to details shared by UPEIDA, as on 8 August 2020, the overall progress of package one is 44.57 per cent, package two is 49.56 per cent, package three is 67.38 per cent, package four is 50.4 per cent, package five is around 50.4 per cent, package six is around 49 per cent, package seven is around 48.7 per cent, package eight is around 49.8 per cent. Earlier it was reported that the work on the 340.824 km long Purvanchal Expressway got delayed for almost two months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, efforts are being made to complete the project by this year-end, months prior to the official target of April 2021.

Originating from Lucknow’s Chand Sarai, the six-lane (expandable to eight lanes) access-controlled expressway will end at Haidaria in Ghazipur district. The project is being developed on the basis of EPC (engineering, procurement, and construction).

Once the expressway is thrown open to the public, seamless connectivity will be provided between nine predominantly agricultural districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh and Lucknow including, Barabanki, Sultanpur, Azamgarh, Ghazipur, Amethi, Ayodhya, Ambedkarnagar, and Mau. Apart from this, the expressway will also link them to the national capital via the 302 km long Agra-Lucknow Expressway and Agra-Greater Noida Yamuna Expressway, which is 165 km long.

LMAO, the audacity!!! I find it amusing how people shit of poorer states just to feel better about themselves. Coming to the road conditions of UP, generalizing is a trait of ignorants. It was one the first places to a have a proper long greenfield expressway. I still remember how rich idiots use to bring their expensive bikes and cars specifically to yamuna expressway to have fun.
