T-90 Bhishma / T-72 Ajeya of Indian Army : News and Discussions

I remember that the first order was for some 250 tanks i think, then a order for around 1000 more tanks. So by 2023-24 we are looking for a fleet of 1600+/- T90, 200 Arjun Mk1/Mk1a, and 1200+/- T72 CIA atleast?

In 2024 we could be looking at 2000+ T-90s and 1500 T-72s. And post 2027, the 1500 T-72s would be reduced to 1200 or 1000.

And we will likely need another batch of 300-500 T-90MS or superior to make up for the exit of the T-27s and the guaranteed delays with FRCV.

Army still has not given any proposal for active protection systems on the t90 though. This is an issue. If its too expensive to retrofit the whole force atleast those regiments in the integrated battle groups which will go in first and face dug in atgm positions should have them.

The army checked out Trophy, Iron Fist, Shtora, LEDS-150 and Arena and deemed them all below requirements.

IA may seriously consider the Afghanit though, if the Russians manage to fit it on the T-90.

But the army has a request out for an APS under Make 1 category.

Still unsure how an unmanned tank is going to do in combat.Imo we shouldnt bet on it atm,and stick to fmbt. There is no rush, our armour is vastly superior to pak,and only whatever few regiments are facing china need better penetration power in their apfsds. The t90 ms should cover that.

Our armour may be vastly superior, but pretty soon the numbers will start dropping as the T-72s finish their service life. So we need a new 15-year tank production deal.

We need to scrap a few armour regiments of southern command and central indian deep reserves. They are costly..useless against china and also against pakistsn who are hopelessly outgunned already .These formations were raised in 1970s and 80s under sundarji doctrine for a grand battle which simply wont happen now.We need lesser number of tanks..more standoff capability in army..create a dedicated command under army for brahmos..nirbhay and pragati missiles like pla rocket forces. An electronic warfare brigade is also must for all frontline formations.

Or, we can move them to frontlines

Only the turret is unmanned. Just wondering is the loading and firing mechanism too complicated to be automated ?

Why aren't we ordering more Arjun mk2s??

There are new designations now. It's Arjun Mk1 and Mk1A. Mk2 is a much more lighter version.

Army has accepted 118 Mk1A, so those will hit production pretty soon, in probably a few months.

For large scale induction, it's not possible because the tank is too heavy.

Why our army is so much concerned about weight when we have to operate it in plains? AFAIK the weight of Arjun mk1A is still less than Abrams.
