Tejas Mk2 (Medium Weight Fighter) - News and discussions

I think the IAF anticipates the LCA MK2's aerodynamic characteristics to be on par with or even superior to those of the Gripen and Rafale. They have access to all of the flying parameters for both of these aircraft, and since the MK2 will have EW components that are identical to those of the AMCA, they will compare them mostly on its A2A features. Possible "Dogfight Simulation with the Rafale" scenario. Hal and Ada best of luck.

IAF should start negotiations with US in F35, so that we will have a gen5 fighter with Tricolour. I have zero faith that AMCA conclusion on time.
The most important factor is TIME

Seeing the perpetual delays in MK A
IAF has no trust in ADA and HAL that they will adhere to time schedules

Even if we ask for F 35 that request will be turned down because we operate both Su 30 And S 400

My point is that IAF is being criticized for pursuing 114 MRFA

But the Tejas Fanboys don't take any questions on MK 1A delays

MK 2 prototype is also not ready yet

And these Fanboys want IAF to order 200 MK 2 planes right Now

@STEPHEN COHEN

Remember Mk1A delayed in price negotiations for 2 years.

@Ashwin says money was already sanctioned

Someone said HAL is building a single prototype using internal funds

@Ankit Kumar

Even if One Prototype is made and it undertakes first successful flight , then GOI will immediately sanction
All the required funds

But making a totally New plane from the very beginning is not easy

MK 2 is bigger in size , new engine
AESA , internal fuel capacity is much larger , more hard points, IRST , New Mission computer, Sensor Fusion , they are going for everything

No clarity on EW suite , whether it will be internal or podded jammer

AESA is supposed to be UTTAM

And so many agencies involved in assembling it , testing and certification

LRDE for Radar , DARE for EW suite
BEL for IRST and Cockpit avionics , HAL and ADA for overall assembling
And Testing and certification

If time taken for MK 1A is looked as a Benchmark , then first prototype is easily 3 years away

HAL has already started in preparation for the first prototype rollout, which is anticipated for the first quarter of 2022. Why would HAL need further funding if its books (MK1A and other items) are good? They had to invest their own money in the creation of the product, similar to that of Kalyani, Tata, and Mahindra. Maybe they need further funds to create extra prototypes, but for the first prototype, they should have sufficient funds. Once the 1st launch is over, it will create excitement in the market, and we should invite our customers to this launch, like Egypt, Philippines, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, and Malaysia,...I think If HAL will show their books to any financial institutions they will be ready to fund them for the new projects.

Not HAL but ADA.

As saurav jha is saying they have money left from LCA FSED phase 3 funding. It was approved for LCA mk2 development back in 2009. Indrani is wrong here.

You can put a 414 engine on a new airframe and show a Roll Out

But what about the SPECIFICATIONS that Both IAF and ADA have agreed and signed upon

IAF will not give any waivers , whatsoever

The Key word from IAF chief interview is " Production Model "

So the question is How many years for the Journey From
Prototype to Production Model

MK 1A took 6 years from 2016 to 2022 to become a Reality

As we have recently learned that One Prototype has begun Test Flying

Serial production of MK1A will begin in 2024

True, I have no worries about the LCA MK2's EW, radar, cockpit configuration, or payload capacity. Since it will be taken from AMCA and powerful engine configuration, it will be far better than any 4.5 generation. However, what is the benefit in terms of aerodynamic characteristics? Can it compete on A2A with the Rafale? Will the canard offer a comparable or superior attack angle and agility than the Rafale? Time will only tell.

MK 2 has completed Critical Design Review and has moved onto the Prototype stage

But for AMCA , only the Preliminary
Design Review has happened.

MK 2 and AMCA airframes are totally different

Its a PSU, it bound to pay back the dividend to GOI. GOI will be sanction the permission to any PSU to something, then only they can start the work. Getting permission to use fund is the main hurdle, sourcing it comes secondary.

I wouldn't overestimate the jet. At the very least, the IAF expects M2000 level performance. If ADA overachieves that, it would be an achievement. It doesn't need to beat Gripen E or Rafale in a dog fight, it only has to be better than the F-16 and Chinese jets.

@Ankit Kumar

What Indranil said is the biggest hurdle.
