We don't need to release the tanker. We are are multi-trillion dollar economy, that lost cargo is pittance to us, and all the crew are non-British - mostly Indian. We'll just drive Iran to bankruptcy until it yields.
Iran have placed themselves in the same situation they did in 1988 when an Iranian airliner was shot down. The engagement rules are now to shoot any dubious Iranian vessels approaching the tankers regardless of what their intention may be.

The militia groups killed the civilians and were still killing civilians when the bulk of allied forces left. Sunni vs Shia.
Assad controls about as much of Syria as democratic forces do in Libya, so he's hardly won.

To be honest, this is the best way to handle the situation until the deal is renegotiated or more diplomatic heads prevail. Push more escort ships into the gulf to shoo away the Iranians and coordinate more with allies in the region.
Deny Iran its economy and wish their citizens the best of luck eating missiles and enriched uranium. Eventually they will have to come back to the table.
