VL-SRSAM Missiles for Indian Navy

Even if we don't get UVLS, Navy should try to upgrade their current SAM capabilities.
32 Barak won't cut it.
Atleast 48 VLSRSAM for current 7 destroyer and 7 frigates.
Might as well add more Barak/MRSAM on destroyers.

Kolkata class - 3 vessels (32-48 VLSRSAM)
Vishakapatnam class- 4 vessels (32-48)
Nilgiri class - 7 vessels (32-48)
NGMV- 6 vessels (24 Missile)
NGC/NGF - (32 for Corvette and 48 for Frigates)
Current 16 Brahmos VLS are good enough.
I am concerned about SAM numbers

32 might be enough, but having more won't hurt us.
Vikrant CBG can easily have 100+ interceptors operating.
The lack of short range interceptor is a problem.
Barak 8 also have some terminal BMD capabilities?
If I'm not wrong
Ships , or any major assets are deployed with specific roles in mind, When in an wartime operational deployment, there will be other assets carrying more units around. More important, if there is any major attack in a repeated pattern, the targeted assets will not be expected to stand there as sitting ducks. Instead position change & call back will happen as well as other major assets will be diverted to strengthen area defence & area coverage.

Military role is always mission centric and beyond the specified role a major ship asset is not expected to be a hero and do everything on its own like how movies portray even in some serious war movie plot. Basically the difference between a guard dog and a stray wild cheetah that can hunt guard dogs. The 2nd one is way more canny in nature.

B8 has a minimum intercept range of 500m, making it capable of point defence. It is seen as an alternative to the PAC-3 which is a BMD specific system. That alone should tell you about its true capabilities.

B8 is the Swiss army knife among AD systems.

It's reaction and launch rate from what I've seen in videos is somewhat suboptimal compared to vlsrsam.
It can be a good meduim and short range air defense missile with limited anti ballistic capabilities, but its not suitable for point defense with high success rate against high speed low flying targets to the extent vl-srsam will be.

You can compare yourself.

Vl-srsam

Barak 8
From 0:30 seconds.

True. But the B8 is unique in its class in having that low of a min engagement range. IAI has really outdone itself in delivering such a versatile set of capabilities in a petite, ~270kg airframe.

That said, B8 is not a dedicated point defence system. The Israeli Navy itself uses the C-Dome for inner layer defense.
