What according to you should be Indian Military strategy, tactics or technology build up?

We should look at mastering specific technology over chasing the whole chain of everything in a blueprint of a system. My contention is that today world is globalised and re-inventing the wheel may not serve the purpose.

An example
1. Perfecting Kaveri with Safran and developing a family of engines.
2. looking at civilian engine spin-off from the Safransied Kaveri program
3. Focussing on AESA Radars
4. Focussing on EW aspects
5. Focussing on Space-based assets for SIGINT, ELINT, IMINT, SATINT and COMINT
6. Focussing on cyber warfare
7. extended research and use of Artifical Intelligence and critical application in decision making by scenario simulations
8. Focusing on Energy Weapons

The topic is to express opinions on what you feel should be way forward,,

  • Rafale MII for IAF + IN
  • Revive LCA MK2 with Safranised Kaveri and Rafale electronic suite
  • Set up cooperation for Rafale MLU to take into account IAF and IN needs
  • Set up cooperation with Dassault for AMCA as part of FCAS futur French system of Systems

I would like to add Military transport Aircraft and its civilian spinoffs as well

@Picdelamirand-oil
What about Thales extended product line and possible usage in say Underwater assets..

Also civilian spin-off of programs of Thales into Smart Cities concept ,,,

Strategy: Blow up the enemy.
Tactics: Look cool while doing it.
Build-up: Buy weapons for the specific purpose of blowing up the enemy.

The army and navy are doing everything that they need to do, and they are doing it well.

The army is getting spanking new tanks, infantry modernization is back on track and we will start seeing results there, the Mountain Strike Corps is nearly raised and should be ready by 2020, a lot of ammunition production is in the process of being privatized, a lot of other weapons and support equipment are being privatized as well. The WWR will go back to adequate levels by 2019.

The navy will start getting their new frigates and destroyers, as many as 15 new ships there. 10 new nuclear subs have been signed for and we may order 9 more subs in a few years. The helicopter tenders are on track.

It's the IAF that's stuck in babudom circus. An MII decision has to be made soon.

Technology build up first, Strategies, tactics can evolve once we got a lead in technology, You can't do much tactics, strategy with Cold war era Weaponry and Technology, while your opponent deploys UAV's , Future Robotic soldiers etc. on battlefield sitting in their homes.

First we need to focus on Indigenous technology development because No one can win a long term war with foreign dependency.

Second, split-up all major DPSUs ( HAL , DRDO... ) into smaller dedicated modules with their own and direct funding systems.

Third, Heavy privatization in defense manufacturing under strict set of Rules and Regulations.

Forth and the last, Need a Cheif of Defense Staff as soon as possible. And stop leaning towards any of single nation either its Russia , France , Israel or any other.

We should try to induct platforms that provide heavy firepower at cheaper rates like Howitzers and long range rocket artillery , RCLs, SPGs , Tank destroyers and attack helicopters. Cuz firepower make the enemy piss in their pants. These are cheap platforms which can be acquired in large numbers. We should fasten our cruise missile program and induct thousands of cruise missiles. This alone will make an enemy think twice before starting any hostilities with us.

In navy we should build dozens of mid sized corvettes (2000+ tons) and armed them with brahmos/desi kalibr/ Nirbhay so that these ships can threaten an entire Carrier battle group. Hundreds of missile boats to secure the coastlines.

Strategy revolves around these things-
1) Indian ocean region and its strategic choke points
2) muslim control of oil and muslim need for food
3)Islamic Military Alliance
4) Defence of Andaman and Lakshadweep
5) defence of Africa from muslim invasion for gaining supplies by taking advantage of african weakness
6) Focus on Bangladesh, Pakistan and internal jihadia
7) Technology acquisition and defence indigenisation
8) developing MIC - Military Industrial Complex
9) readiness to convert civilian sector to defence at a moment's notice

Equipment : (Start from the User)
1) Standardize the equipment used by the infantry (apart from specialized units) ie everything from Battle dress to protective pads, BPJ and helmets , squad level communication , NVGs. etc (support equipment)
2) Make the use and maintenance of such, important and mandatory, and not for photo op

Policy
1) Clear and final Mandate and Role for each branch of the armed forces! for example,
a)the Use of helicopters for CAP mission should be given to the Army, Airforce can keep its fixed wing for the same
b) All Marine duties such as AShW (fighters) should be the navy's role , (in the words - the Jaguar IM Sqn. should be given to the IN)
2) Stop using the Armed forces for Civil Roles (apart from Natural Disaster) example - having the IA to clean High Altitudes areas, IA engineers building the Over head bridge in Mumbai.
3) Clear and official communication - pull up journos for misquotes, hilarious writes ups and analysis (that always quote some BS source)

> Focus on Joint Ventures, till our R&D become mature for cutting edge technology.
> Give importance to soldiers basic needs like light weight bullet proof jacket and helmets and other gizmos.
> Importance for Battle field Management and network centric forces.
> Attract people with bright minds from other third world countries and our country to work in defense fields, focus on scientists from Russia and USSR offsprings.
> Encourage private entities to come up with new cutting edge technology and give them some monetary assistance even if it results in failure( I know most of it will end in scams)
> Navy should focus on more submarines rather than air craft carriers

first kill or atleast permanently disable all the bureaucrats in MOD :devilish:

this will clear the path for any good decision

on a serious note work needs to be done on

1. communication systems encompassing present and future technology
2. cyber warfare offensive and defensive
3. networking and AI

importantly set up a industrial espionage program to help indian MIC get over roadblocks and to get them a head start

Here are my 2 cents for future technology
  • After listening to the discussion in LSTV, the complexity of integrating the command centre of S400 to PAD/AAD is a challenge, I feel we should plan for an agile military defence network system where we can add remove any kind missile may be similar to Iron Dome.
  • Data/ information utilization (resource utilization), we should create a network-centric warfare system where all our defence equipment can share their information that includes a foot soldier to drone, submarine, tank, fighter plane, satellite… And then use those captured data in a systematic manner against our enemy.
  • We are in the right direction in LCA, about developing IAF MK2 no but definitely yes for IN MK2 .i want to see LCA deployed in both IN and IAF.Once Tejas Mk1A has UTAAM AESA (99% sure since we will plan to export these planes, we shouldn't be like Gripen) and Mid-air refuelling probe I think we are done with Tejas, EW we can upgrade Anytime. How far we modify it’s not going to be F35 killer. We should move on to AMCA.
  • Finish the Kaveri work ASAP, KAVERI is going to be used in AMCA as AMCA will be with TVC engine and Russia is not going to fit their TVC nozzle in any other country engine.
  • Work on Nirbhay and make it perfect, We need this cheap, accurate nuclear-tipped cruise missile in our inventory.

List below on priority :
1. Minimum Deterrence capability.
2. Smart solution to add force multiplier rather than increasing numbers e.g. AWACS(450 km range) + Refueler + Sukhoi : Combo is one such example which is unbeatable.
3. Support indigenous industry, otherwise begging others for weapon while fighting the enemy has never been an advisable tactic.

And just to add something extra, to further add more content.
4. Leave this colonial mentality, mostly the top hierarchy officers.
5. Engage with society & young ones to inform them about the current security threats in all dimensions be it Cyber, Economic, Social etc.
