DRDO carries out successful flight-trial of India’s first long-range hypersonic missile off the Odisha coast​

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a successful flight-trial of India’s first long-range hypersonic missile from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha late on November 16, 2024. This hypersonic missile is designed to carry various payloads for ranges greater than 1,500 kms for the Armed Forces.

The missile was tracked by various range systems, deployed in multiple domains. The flight data obtained from down range ship stations confirmed the successful terminal maneuvers and impact with high degree of accuracy.

This missile has been indigenously developed by the laboratories of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile complex, Hyderabad along with various other DRDO laboratories and Industry Partners. The flight-trial was carried out in the presence of senior scientists of DRDO and officers of the Armed Forces.

In a post on X, Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh described the flight-trial as a historic achievement which has put India in the group of select nations having capabilities of such critical and advanced military technologies. He congratulated DRDO, Armed Forces and the Industry for the successful flight trial.

The second stage might be able to be launched from UVLM, for a significantly shorter range and speed
Maybe a lighter booster can be used for UVLM.

As of now it's anti ship role it seems.
Could be.

LRAshM and AshBM are different missiles it seems.

Length is a problem, the BrahMos canister for UVLM is 800mm in diameter and 8.5m long. A 0.7m long booster won't be that useful, will have to wait and see what they do with the ship-launched variant.

Important detail, the missile is labelled as 3. So 3rd test?

Or just the 3rd missile for a lot of 4-5 missiles.

Looks like 2 to me.
Assuming it would be ~500km or thereabouts in that configuration - doesn't seem to offer any advantage to using this as opposed to just BrahMos-ER.
Depending on the flight characteristics, if it really glides at a 15-30km range at hypersonic speeds, it will be a good compliment when paired with the combination of BrahMos and other AShMs.

Just a wild (and may be very wrong) idea.

This baby has a bomb bay doors of about 8-8.5 meter long and easily accommodates a 0.5 meters wide ballistic missile...
For a 8 meters long and 0.6 meter wide missile... its an interesting proposition.

This thing goes all the way to 16 KM up in the atmosphere and flies at Mach 2.1 ... Missile dropped from this in thin atmosphere will need a very small booster to push it to Mach 4 and beyond.

HGV flying at 20-25 KM altitude at 7-8 mach will be a real headache for an aircraft carrier fleet. This one bomber alone can carry 10-15 of these missiles. This bomber can fly 2.1 mach to a distance of almost 2500 KM in about an hour. Deployed from Hyderabad this one can arrive at a launch point near the Andamans (possibly having thick anti air cover to keep annoying forward deployed carrier based fighters away), launch a salvo of 10-15 missiles and get the hell out of there. 1500 KM away the invading carrier fleet disappears in the sea at malacca st. Even more fun? Imagine 4-5 of these birds.
 
This reminds me about an old interview of Avinash Chander then DRDO chief.
Saurav Jha: What is the status of the anti-radiation missile and the long range anti-ship missile?

Avinash Chander: For the anti-radiation missile design is in progress, in fact hardware is being readied for the first trials. We expect successful trials of this ARM from an aircraft in about the next three years.

The long range anti-ship missile is on the drawing board, and we are confident that in about six years we would be able to get it ready. The long range anti-ship missile is going to be a ballistic missile with a seeker which can hit ships at long range.

Saurav Jha: So this is a rough equivalent of the Chinese DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile? An anti-access/area denial system?
Avinash Chander: Something like that yes. So as you can see almost the entire spectrum of missile capability is being addressed. And addressed to meet state of the art requirements thereby giving full teeth to our armed forces.

Very interesting observation.
Maybe a lighter booster can be used for UVLM.
Boosters of the Brahmos or the Nirbhay can be borrowed.
Assuming it would be ~500km or thereabouts in that configuration - doesn't seem to offer any advantage to using this as opposed to just BrahMos-ER.
If it is cheaper than the Brahmos-ER, it can be used to saturate enemy AD. Remember the video of a simulation battle between a Philippines based Brahmos battery taking on a Chinese fleet?

I doubt this missile can still do hypersonic gliding without the K4 derived booster. Without that booster, I don't think it would be able to gain sufficient speed.

I agree. Similar opinion I also have it to acquire Tu-160 for guarding the IOR region. This will give unprecedented firepower to cover a vast IOR. As China grows its naval firepower, we need something in the IOR region to counter it, and Tu 160 will give that edge. Also, if DRDO/HAL modify it for dropping heavy-weight torpedoes, that will be a value-for-money asset.
