STEEL CUTTING OF FIRST NEXT GENERATION MISSILE VESSEL (NGMV) FOR INDIAN NAVY AT COCHIN SHIPYARD LIMITED, KOCHI​

‘Steel Cutting’ ceremony of the first ship of Next Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV), was held at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) on 16 Dec 24, Kochi in the presence of Cmde S Parthiban, Warship Production Superintendent, Kochi. Contract for construction of six NGMVs was concluded with CSL in March 2023 with induction of the ships in the Indian Navy planned from 2027 onwards.

The NGMVs are planned to be installed with state-of-the-art weapon and sensors, which would significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy as a Future Ready and Combat Ready Force. The construction of the ships reinforces India’s commitment to build a strong and modern Navy, capable of operating in the complex maritime environment of the Indian Ocean Region.

The ships are envisaged as high-speed vessels with a formidable array of weapon and sensors including Surface to Surface Missile System, Anti-Missile Defence Systems, Air Surveillance and Fire Control Radars. All the major role defining equipment have been indigenously developed and manufactured, underscoring the Nation’s prowess and are in consonance with GoI initiative of an ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.

Inclined AshM launchers on the foredeck in 2024? Seriously??

While the design probably doesn't have enough depth to accommodate Brahmos VLS, are amidships launchers such an alien concept to the folks over at CSL? How could the IN accept this?? :eek:

@Adm_Kenobi the design seems to have changed alot. I don't think it will be equipped with any SAM system.
That may be due to VL-SRSAM not being ready for induction.

MFR-X is a small 4 panel X band radar similar to the VL-SRSAM radar.

I might get some flak for this but maybe WDB outsourcing design work to the shipyards isn't such a good idea. They should be taking the lead, given their vast experience.

When the P28 Kamorta class was designed, WDB did the basic design in-house and only left detailed design to the shipbuilders, GRSE.

Had they followed the same approach, we wouldn't have ended up with two distinct designs on the same prog - ASW-SWC. A 16 ship production run with few commonality/logistics benefits.

I agree with you, but WDB is stretched thin and is going to take the burden of designing the LPD as well, it's best to let shipyards handle the design for not so complex ships.

It can be solved with better coordination with shipyards, the mistake with ASW SWC was corrected in the NGOPV project where GSL & GRSE are building the same design.
 
Could be but this is a ~1500t class design like the Kora class. I'm no naval architect but positioning heavy weapons amidships would've helped improve overall stability. NGMV is not meant to carry triple torpedo tubes there so space couldn't have been an issue.

Maybe they're adhering to tradition. After all, no IN ship design till date has featured AShM launchers amidships.
