One fails to understand why did it take MoD forever to consider this option for AWACS as well as refuellers. There's the whole fleet for Jet Airways lying idle too.

over 20 yrs easily. IAF does not use them as much as the airlines do.
I think for AWACS it should be fine to use AIR India Aircraft but for Refueler there may be a change in airframe structure or maybe a stronger landing gear ...
In airline service, an aircraft is utilised for over 10 hrs every day with an annual utilisation of over 3300 hrs. But in IAF service, they will not be used for more than 1500 hrs in an year.
The platform should be of similar size to A330. All the above mentioned are single-aisle aircraft which Air India operates. They will have to scale down dome and performance configurations. This could be just a recommendation.
At least AWACS-India is back on track. Hopefully we will see first deliveries before 2027.
It's a downgrade compared to the A330, and the IAF is going to lose its ability to refuel. But it definitely makes sense not to invest way beyond its utility when heading closer to the post-2030 world, when ramjet/scramjet AAMs will bring them down from 500Km away.
Guessing it's going to be airbus for awacs, modifications with airbus help.

So the 360 deg coverage AWACS will go to Airbus 330 and the additional IAF requirements for netra type aews will be fulfilled with Air india aircrafts instead of embraer aircraft? Is it like that or that pic is just a representation type?

These guys are just stupid. A330 is far bigger platform for AWAC and so is IL-76. IN P-8s have far more stations for controllers than IL-76 based awac. Even A321 will have extra space. Every five years the size of electronic devices reduce by 50% and their capabilities increase 200%. What was good in 2010 is not the norm for 2025.
The original DRDO AWAC was based on Avro and had the chapati on top. Why cant an A321 have it. I will rather go for B737-800 as the platform because IAF already flies B737-700s as VIP Transport. We will have similarity of type training for pilots and also spares and also commonality with IN P-8s.
